The bell tower, or belfry on Abercorn Church near South Queensferry, Scotland. A free standing bell tower may be referred to by its Italian name, campanile. Note that in this case, there is only one bell and it is rung from outside the church. Abercorn Parish Church is a remarkable place. But even though a small part of it can be dated back to the 1100s, what you can see today is only part of the story. There are clues to an even longer history in the collection of stones on view in the Abercorn Museum, just inside the churchyard gates. These include Viking hog-back burial stones; a cross stone; and a carved cross-shaft dating back to the 600s. Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. Campanile San Marco and Doge’s Palace, Venice St Mark’s Campanile, the bell tower of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, is located in a corner of St Mark’s square and is a recognizable symbol of the city. The tower is 98.6 meters tall, and is capped by a pyramidal spire, at the top of which sits a golden weathervane in the form of the archangel Gabriel. The campanile reached its present form in 1514. As it stands today, however, the tower is a reconstruction, completed in 1912 after the collapse of 1902. The Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale di Venezia) was the residence of the Doge of Venice. The current palace was largely constructed between 1309 to 1424, designed perhaps by Filippo Calendario. It replaced earlier fortified buildings of which relatively little is known. The palace was badly damaged by fire in 1574. In the subsequent rebuilding work it was decided to respect the original gothic style. Date: 27th August 2007.

A different view of St. Mark’s Venice as seen from the Campanile with a zoom lens. I tried to capture the symphony created by pedestrians, tables and floor patterns of the piazza. This shot was an attempt to create an abstract representation of St. Mark’s.

‘El Padron de Casa’ (literally ‘the Householder’) is the affectionate name given by the inhabitants of Venice to St Mark’s campanile, one of the most representative symbols of the city. This 98m-high bell tower, located in the square of the same name just in front of the Basilica, may have formerly been a lookout post or even a lighthouse before it collapsed from a lightning strike in 1902. The reconstruction was completed in 1912. This photo belongs to a series dedicated to the city of Venice, where I did a trip in 2007 during the Carnival period.
