A young reticulated giraffe almost disappears when standing against it’s mother. Captive animals.
This is an Eastern collared lizard, and this particular specimen belongs to a subspecies of the broader genus that inhabits the few remaining glade habitats in southern Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. I personally really like this image because the colorful, lichen covered rocks are just as beautiful as the lizard, and the two together make for a special treat! / /
emapearl hiding in a forest of dead bullrushes. this picture looks to me a little sharp, but before i uploaded it to RB it wasn’t nearly as sharp, had anyone else had this problem?

You’d think that with their bright coloring, the red fox would stand out like a sore thumb and find it hard to hide. Not so. Despite their color, they blend in remarkably well. I interrupted her search for breakfast this morning, briefly, but she didn’t seem to mind much. Wheatridge, CO

While I was out above tree line today, I saw my usual collection of small alpine critters (pikas & marmots), and I got a chance to photograph a rarely (by me, anyway) glimpsed animal, a rock ptarmigan. I actually saw 2 today. Ptarmigan are from the grouse family, and blend in so well with their environment that they are rarely seen – when you do see one, it’s usually because you’re about to step on it accidentally. Nothing to scare the bejeebers out of you like having what you thought was a rock explode from the ground and take flight! Their coloring changes to suit the season – in winter, they become pure white to blend in with snow, in summer a gray/brown color matching local rocks, and in the shoulder seasons, a mix of the two. This is the mixed coloration. Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) / Mt Evans Wilderness Area, CO / Sony a700 / Sigma 300 f/2.8+1.4TC / ISO400, 1/2000, f/2.8
