Mini photo shoot
by Cathleen Tarawhiti|| |!http://images-3.redbubble.com/img/art/size:small/v…
A special “hi” to Meach (top right); thanks for the train pics :) Added 19 Feb 08 …since this they have been really getting into it. Every time I pull my camera out their little heads stick up like meerkats and they start the posing; I’m trying to ween then off the cheesy grin, the tongue poking out and the gang hand signals (unbeknownst to them). And it’s working – I put them on my end of the camera so they can see a normal pose and a silly pose and I can see them working it out in their heads. Wee marvels. Now they call themselves photographers, or rather, petonkriffers which is even better.

Hi all! / I’m heading down to Victoria next week for a whole week of nothing but photography and relaxion!! I can picture my self there now….no kids, no hubby, no phone….just me and my camera! Setting up a studio

Hello :) I’m about to head down to the camera shop and say “hand over all of your photo shoot studio set up equipment or the dog get’s it”. Not really, I wouldn’t hurt animals, unless they’re a particularly plump chicken, but I have been known to drop a few lenses. Well one, but it rolled down the hill. Actually, now that I mention it, I’m looking for the paperwork for said lens to take in on account of the strange rattly noise. I just made that up Harvey Norman, in case you’re reading this. Serious. So I thought I’d better check in with my mentors (Wendy, Mel, Rose, Paul, Paul, and Paul, Deke, Dave, Shanghaiwu, Gemlenz, Sam, Ashley, Peter, Barbara) first before I sell our first born and maybe the second. Better wear a shortish dress. Kidding again. Not even. If it get’s me $500 off I’ll wear bells on my shortish dress. See, still kidding. It’s hard to tell though. If you saw me right now, You’d know I wouldn’t be caught dead in bells. Any advice on which equipment I need for a full set up? Thank you :) / www.cathleentarawhiti.co.nz

By Darren Stones – Freelance Photojournalist / Subscribe via RSS/Atom Bermagui Seaside Fair 2007 – Blog version with accompanying photographs and music video Note: Photographs relating to this article can be found here. Horseshoe Bay – Bermagui The 10th Bermagui Seaside Fair was held on Saturday 10 March 2007 and what a spectacular event it turned out to be. Thousands of locals from the region were proud as punch to partake and witness a fun-filled day of activities. Festivities commenced on the main wharf at the Bermagui Boat Harbour at 8am with the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony. Bishop Allan Ewing conducted the blessing and also addressed the gathering of locals regarding their continued dedication in making the annual festival a continued success. During the ceremony, the dapper dressed gentlemen from the Bermagui Probus Club Men’s Choir sang hymns, and other local singers and musicians performed. The majority of events were conducted at the Dickinson Oval precinct and a large crowd attended. Bermagui Seaside Fair announcer, June Tarlinton, said “They estimate there will be around 10,000 people and judging from what I’m seeing, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are fairly close to the mark.” “The street parade is extremely popular,” said June when referring to the amount of participants and spectators. “The Bega Vintage Car Club has forty cars involved this year and they’ve never had this many ever. The way the cars have been restored is awesome.” As part of the fair each year the Bermagui Citizen of the Year is announced. This year’s recipient of the award was Candy Craine, who was recognised for her tireless work in caring for sick and injured native animals on her property. June Tarlinton said “Candi Craine was nominated by persons within the community and she was a very worthy recipient of the award.” “She has put a lot of effort into rehabilitating animals since the loss of her husband.” Candi is also an avid photographer and she exhibited many of her quality wildlife photographs at the photographic exhibition at the Bermagui Country Club during the Seaside Fair. Celebrity entertainers, Frankie J Holden and Michelle Pettigrove, were invited to perform and compere the Bermagui Idols competition. The competition catered for local talent and the performers came out in droves to strut their stuff on stage for the gathered throng. Winner of the Bermagui Idol primary school age section was the highly talented nine-year-old Sophie Halliday, who performed a cover version of the song Who Knew by Pink. Judging for the competition was carried out in a novel way, and this was done by gauging the level of audience applause when each contestant’s name was announced. When Sophie’s name was announced, the applause and screaming was deafening. You could have come to the conclusion that her family in attendance numbered 500. She was undoubtedly the star of this year’s Bermagui Idol competition. Young local band, Overdrive, belted out a few tunes for the large and receptive crowd. The street parade, sponsored by Australian regional and rural broadband internet provider, activ8me, was a roaring success as it made its way along the spectator-lined one kilometre stretch of Lamont Street. The Batemans Bay Soldiers Club Pipe Band lead the colourful parade which included floats representing local schools, various community groups, the Bega Vintage Car Club, SES and Rural Fire Service, Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club members, Bermagui CWA and street performers. Novelty events were conducted for kids, and kids at heart, with the Chuck-A-Tuna competition proving more than a handful for participants. A little bending of the rules by some was detected, however it all added to the fun and frivolity of the afternoon. Local Aboriginal dance group, Gulaga Dancers, were in attendance and performed traditional style dances for the crowd. Carnival rides, a spectacular fireworks display in the evening over Horseshoe Bay, and a sandcastle competition were also part of the day’s festivities. Dozens of stalls were erected on Dickinson Oval with stallholders exhibiting and selling local produce and products, advertising local and regional services and businesses, and supplying food and beverages for the masses. On Endeavour Point Headland, Sculpture on the Edge featured sculptures by Alan Watt, Richard Moffatt, Michael Le Grand and the provocative Melbourne sculptor Greg Taylor. Bermagui, approximate population 1120, is situated in the gorgeous Sapphire Coast region of New South Wales and is renowned as one of the best, if not the best, places for marlin fishing in Australia. It’s also home to a fishing fleet, and is close to Montague Island which hosts numerous animal species. Other local attractions in Bermagui are the scenic Horseshoe Bay, the Bermagui Boat Harbour where you can witness the unloading of the catch of the day, and the Bermagui Blue Pool. The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel exhibits fishing memorabilia in the main bar, lounge and dining areas. It’s also a top spot for a soothing ale or lemonade. Meals are hearty and excellent value for money. High quality accommodation at affordable rates is available at the Bermagui Beach Hotel and the ultra modern Harbourview Motel. Bermagui is a friendly and scenic seaside town located 378 kilometres south of Sydney, Australia. Put it on your list of must see places – it’s a gem. So today I went to have my senior pictures taken at a studio. It was so weird being on the other side of the camera. I am usually the one taking the pictures not having people taking pictures of me. It was really interesting to be on the flip side. I didnt really know how to react and it was really hard for me. I definately like being behind the camera A LOT better!!!

This young travels in my native region was rich. / - Rich in photos, I returned to the places of my childhood, my adolescence, the schools, and the secondary school. I also returned to the places where I had made my first photos (old trains) with the first one reflex whom I had bought myself with my first salary of student job. / - And then a magnificent thing, which touches me much more that I can say it : / My father gave me the camera of his own father. An old folding camera which uses of the 6×9… I do not still know if it still works. I’m very touched and simply to imagine that I can make photos with the camera of my grandfather moves me… PB

Framing the photo. As said in lesson one, how the image looks in the view finder or display screen in what you get. Once the image is on the computer, you can play. One thing you can do afterwards is FRAME the photo. Also known as cropping. Of course, best done in camera first, because zooming in afterwards loses pixels, and information which makes the image sharp. But if you’ve already cropped, it’s hard to go back! Being digital, I take a few at varying distances, when able. How to crop Portraits. the general advice is; / neck up/shoulders up for close ups on face / waist up / whole body. Note on hands and feet-chopping off hands and feet can look really strange, even arms midlength. Hands and feet can be extra, distracting detail. Note what they are doing in the image, and use your own judgement. Another tip-don’t rely on funny angles to make an image more interesting. It’s a fun thing to play with when beginning. The most important thing is the essence, so as long as it compliments the subject, rather than relies on it as device. Back to cropping. Full length images can be interesting if you push the cropping. In fashion, fill the frame with head and feet right to the edges can make a person look very tall, or imposing. Leaving lots of space around them can make them smaller. Angles / Again, see ‘walking around the subject’ (lara) to see different light-it’s a good tip, to walk around the subject. Getting a person to tilt their head down, and look up with their eyes is a common ‘demure’ look. Face tilted up catches the light in peoples eyes, and disguises double chins. Half turning the shoulders, face more towards the camera is a common position for portraits. (see school photos!). Looking down on a subject makes a person seem soft, more vulnerable and in politics, weak. John Howard complained about ABC doco camera crew doing that to him. Whereas looking up to a subject makes them more monumental, strong and in command. Beware of ‘shooting up the nose’. Again, very little PS here! You get my drift about most of the good stuff being done in camera. It makes sense to do it well before, rather than spend hours in PS ‘(cringe) polishing a turd’. I hate the expression-and yet, so accurate. Get the gold before, as much as you can.

I am soooooooo terribly upset by this….my boyfriend, Steve was using my camera (which is nothing fantastic but has become my third arm), when we got out of the car he was getting bags out of the trunk and put it in his back pocket (it’s also a handy small camera). When we got in the house he wanted to show me a picture of the sky that he took…well my screen had a spider web type crack across it and I can’t see any of the images or anything :( Unfortunately my camera doesn’t have a view finder and just the screen so I can’t even improvise and use it like a film camera and check the photos on my computer. It still works though, which is amazing but doesn’t do me a lot of good. I was shocked at first and couldn’t even say much, I just sat there thinking about all the opportunities I may possibly miss until I can afford a new one or to fix this one…then it donned on me, my sister is due with my first neice any day and I was beside myself that I wouldn’t have my camera to take any pictures of that very special moment. Steve told me that I shouldn’t be so upset over a camera…this coming from the one person in my life who knows exactly how many pictures I do take. I was devastated, I know it wasn’t on purpose but still….so sad :(

Well I’ve decided definitely on the Canon Rebel xt (or xti if I find a good deal on it). I’ve been searching for the past few weeks. I came across a place that had the xt for $359. I was so excited! Planned on going to the bank, making some deposits, moving money around, whatever I had to do to order it today. Then, thank God, my dad stepped in. Asked me questions about it, the warranty, etc. Of course in my excitement last night, I negelcted to look at some of the finer details (I swear I was going to this morning! lol). Went back to the site I found the camera at. I know it’s refurbished, it says “factory restored” but it doesn’t say anything about a warranty. I e-mailed them but now I don’t even want to hear back from them. I also, seeing such a great price and knowing I can afford it, overlooked my past experiences with this company. I bought my current camera from them, my Panasonic Lumix . When I bought that camera, they wanted me to call to confrirm my order before they processed it. I did. They only do that so they can convince dummies like me to buy more stuff. I was talked into “upgrading” to an extended life battery. I was told the standard battery would only last me about a half an hour. Luckily I gave into that one, and I was able to weasel out of buying their overpriced SD cards. When I got the camera, everything worked fine, but the list of items in the box was wrong. Said there should be the standard battery plus the extended life one. Never got the standard battery, when I called them, they claimed it was their upgrade policy. Then why does it still say it’s in there? sigh So needless to say, I’d prefer not to deal with them again. I know after my e-mailed question, they either won’t respond because I said I wouldn’t buy their extended warranty, or they will harrass me about buying it. (In case you’re wondering, the company is Broadway Photo, now that I’ve been reading consumer reviews I feel like an idiot for buying from them in the first place.) But I do see that some people have had luck printing the page that the camera is on on Broadway’s site and taking it into Best Buy. Apparently Best Buy will match other company’s prices? Interesting. May have to try it. I wish I could just buy it from Canon’s e-store, but I really can’t afford $450 right now. Maybe I’ll luck into something at Best Buy, but I think I’m back to my scrimping and saving.
