Lianne / wrote an amazing poem about the desert Desert Wanderings Are the rare oases enough to / sustain the desert nomad? / And where is the desert boundary – / would the journeyman perceive / its end, or like me, see Canaan / and think it only temporary respite – / can he see beauty where I see none, / sculpture where I see sand – / has he more praise for palm trees / than I for all of Canaan’s promise? Deserts are but dry expanses of the mind / the hypochondria boredom breeds, / unirrigated months, parched and barren / where there is naught to slake one’s thirst / and coolness only stones beneath one’s tongue, / monotonous thoughtscapes, uninspired / wishing for rivers, never neared mirages / and longings so undefined / that even prayer is sterile. What happens to dreams that die? / Are they reborn in other minds / nourished in more fertile ground – / do the sands that cover them / windshift / reviving them again, or are they / preserved, like dried straw flowers, / still rich in color / but sapless, too fragile now to grow?

We woke that morning at the onward call / Our camels bridled up, our howdahs full / The sun was rising in the eastern sky / Just as we set out to the desert’s cry – Loreena McKennitt Stock Credits: / Face in sky: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/494578 / Frame of Numbers: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/494576 / Clouds: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/744000 / Wall box: http://Stockinthebox.deviantart.com http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/22542114/ / Caravan: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/507340 / Texture & pyramids/palm trees/additional camel and desert dweller: personal stock of texture and vintage postcards ©2007-2008 Aimee Stewart, Foxfires / All of my artwork and photographs are © All Rights Reserved Worldwide. / My artwork and photos do not belong to the public domain.

The talented Sally Omar / got inspired by This work and wrote this Poem to go with this Image , Thank you my friend. / —-—-—-—-—-— / YES MASTER Thank you for letting me sit for a while / We have walked many miles / I am tired and I have a heavy load / Traveling so far on this sandy road / See my Master I am shedding tears / Doing this for too many years / We have traveled this lonesome place / With sweat dripping down your face / Can we not find something else to do / This is alot of work for me and you / Perhaps we can take a trip / I hear that there are ships / Do they allow Camels inside / Or do you think I must hide / You are a good Master I must say / For allowing me to sit this way / When you speak I understand / And you always give me a hand / I know that you are tired too / Sorry I can’t sing a song for you / It’s really hot and I feel I can’t breathe / When you get up I’ll follow your lead / I guess it’s time to be on our way / We’ll be walking for several days / Now when you are tired sit on my back / I will keep us on the right track / Then again when we’ve walked more miles / Let’s sit down and talk awhile.

The survival of the fittest is the ageless law of nature, but the fittest are rarely the strong. The fittest are those endowed with the qualifications for adaptation, the ability to accept the inevitable and conform to the unavoidable, to harmonize with existing or changing conditions…..... Sally Omar Took few hours to come up with a very moving poem … Sally you write in words what i see in images … love your work my friend. / —-—-—-—-—-- / ALONE A camel in the desert all Alone / Trudging ahead on his own / Afraid to be alone just as you and I / Being alone his soul will die / Searching around for a friendly face / Lost in such a lonesome place / There is no one anywhere in sight / The road ahead is so dull, not bright / A camel being so much like we / All alone losing his identity / Keeps fighting the urge to sit down / Just hoping someone’s around / So we must understand his plight / Should he go left or should he go right / His heart now carrying a heavy load / Walking ahead on this lonesome road / Just like the camel, you and me / Searching ahead trying to see / If there is another soul out there / That will help set the soul free / ALONE.

one of the new desert drawings series . In the old days in the Arabian Gulf , people used to make their homes and their household from palm trees , as you see here the wife would weave the dry strands of palm leaves together to create what they need , mats to set on , baskets, food cover, dinning mats” the round thing behind her ” used on the floor as a dinning table, also the walls of the home made of the branches of the palm tree. / they also colored some of the strands with natural dyes. This is what the palm leaves weaving looks like . /

Some of my fondest memories while living in India took place in the deserts of Rajasthan. / I spent more than one year in and out of the desert. Here is a photo taken by a boy whom I adored. His name was Chilly! He named himself and he was my guide. We met many families and stayed in many homes.. I would go find him after a stressful day when I was doing business in a small town outside of Jaipur and all I would have to do was look at him and he knew,, he would go get Krishna, my favorite camel and we would go out.. He would pack enough of what I liked to eat and sometimes we just stayed out for a few days. It is interesting who you run into in the desert. And some of my future writing will be filled with these stories..
