humble beginnings

I think every photographer has pretty much the same story, when asked, how did you get into photography? All the answers are the same “I have always had a camera in hand, finally decided to make a go at doing it professional because I love it” / I know when I first picked up my camera at the age of nine, I loved it, had it with me all the time. It wasnt until many many years later til a friend finally convinced me to make that HUGE step in allowing anyone and everyone to see what I have shot and go “pro”. I always took the kind words of friends with alittle grain of salt when they would compliment my shots. I knew deep down I didnt quite have it right. I didnt “feel” I had done all I could do. I also felt they were being “nice”, and didnt want to hurt my feelings. So I basically shrugged it off for many years. Thanks to the internet, I had the capability to finally allow more then just friends to see my world through my eye in photograhy. So I finally took that step. / It was a huge step for me, at times I can still feel the butterflies in my stomach when I added a new shot, or even bring out a old one for all to see. Will it be a hit? Is it good enough? Will the public like it and want to buy it? Hell I still feel that way! / So many questions go thru one’s head when they put themselves out there with a passion they truely believe in. / I wont ever forget the very first time someone actually bought something of mine. WOW the rush I got! It just didnt seem Real. I went back a few times, checking out my account status and sure enough, I had finally Sold my work. I never really thought MY work would be good enough that someone I didnt know would want to buy it. I thought about my friends who had said I should take it more seriously from years past, and occassionally I do feel the regret I didnt get into it professionally then. Especially now when everyone has a digital camera and has become instant photographers. I’m here in a world of massive photographers from all over the country, trying to make a living off of it! Which means to me, I need to Learn and produce some of the best shots I possibily can. / The thing tho, it is in my blood, shooting, recording history with this little piece of equipment called a camera. Working on something that is artistic or different. I used to be intimidated by those photographers who had all that expensive gear, and fancy set-ups. At times I would hold my little film camera in hand and think to myself. Hell I can accomplish the same thing with this, as they can with that. But I would still find myself shying away from them, going off into my own little world. I think thru the few years I have openly put my work out in the public. One of the main things I will always remember and that is where I came from, where I started. I still get shy when I am around someone who wants to buy my work. I get sweaty when I am trying to get them a print of the shot they want, making sure it is as perfect as it can possibily be. So many times I feel the words “thank you” isnt enough as they happily go off with MY work!! To this day I still cant find more words to show my gratitude and honor. / I have met quite a few photogs, from all different levels, newbies, mid-ways, and the so called pros. Some have made an impression on me, some I dont ever care to see again. The ones that made the biggest impression on me, where the ones that were just like me, still humbled someone finds their work good enough to buy and show off in their home. The one’s who have snubbed their noses at me due to them having better equipment, or maybe had a few shows, or they are known in their town or known well thru the internet didnt impress me at all. Actually they made me realize exactly what I do NOT want to be as I progess in this field I have chosen. It doesnt matter if you have a throw away camera, or the multi dollar equipment on if you can produce an outstanding shot or not. I think one’s attitude has a lot to do with how successful they are, not what type of equipment they can buy. We all know better equipment does help, but it shouldnt ever change the attitude we all had when we first got started. / The humbleness and gratitude should be the same whether we are just starting or have been in it for 20 or more years. / You dont have to go to school, have a lot of money for high dollar equipment to produce some outstanding work. It’s all in the “eye”, it is how you see things, how you react when someone critiques or compliments. Its all about learning to use the equipment you have and making it work. / No one in this profession should ever lose that humble feeling just because they have improved. There will always be newbies behind you. One should always remember at one time, THEY were newbies. That is something I wont ever forget, the fact I too was once a newbie. Many have helped me, given me tips, they still do. I am like a sponge absorbing all information and tips. I use the input and incorportate it for what works for me and my situation at hand. When I see some people ranting and raving about quality, it really tears me up. It actually pisses me off. No one ever started with the perfectly focused shot, or the perfect exposure. We all started out not knowing a thing. It takes practice, it takes someone helping you along, it takes some honest good feedback, and of course a pat on the back does help build confidence. But we must all learn to listen to what we got Wrong, how else can we improve? In my case, and others who have progressed, Id like to see more helping out the newbies. Instead of ranting and raving about one’s quality of work, help that person. It could be a simple fix, something that person was clueless about and very grateful for the advice. / I had made a pledge to myself years ago when I started on my first public website with so much competition. I wouldnt ever be one of the ones who complained about another’s work. Hell if anything I would rant and rave about how a program used to help a shot is abused with oversaturation on colors or contrast. That is where a rant should be, the abuse of photography…not the learning. The reason I wrote this journal is because of a few forum threads I read. I immediately flashed back to a site I was very happy to get off of because of things just like this. There were more people that had improved and now felt it was their duty to point out flaws instead of helping fix them. / So photographers, even tho you have advanced and you’re more popluar due to your good work. Dont ever forget where you started from. Just because you might be able to buy all the top of line gear, your attitude and humbleness shouldnt ever change. Remember how YOU got started, and where YOU came from. Things YOU had to learn to improve. / But the thing you need to learn the most..is to stay humble, pass on what you have learnt, help someone out instead of spending time complaining, in time your own work will lack that flair. Helping someone in turn helps YOU, helps you remember where you came from, helps you stay sharp on techniques to use…remember….Pass It On. I am hoping that all that read this journal, will remember where and how and what they got started with. If it pissed you off, well to a degree I am sorry, but then to a degree I am not sorry. I hope this journal will make you think of how you might be treating someone who is willing to learn. I dont think there will be one person that does read this, can say..they didnt start out the same way as myself and so many others. / As I tell anyone who is beginning or mid-way, or even pros…. / practice, practice, Practice..and just when you think you have it ALL down…..... Practice some more!

There was a lot of commotion about the whole “mass UFO uncloaking” that was supposed to take place yesterday, Oct. 14th, 2008. I’m frankly not surprised no giant UFOs appeared, however, I do believe there were 3 occasions yesterday where I experienced something I can’t identify 100%. 1. In the A.M. hours, around 11 I think, I saw what looked to be a circle/oval of light about 3-6 feet across with a rainbow colored rim around it. This object was mostly transparent and I could see the building across from mine easily through it. After I turned and saw this thing, it stayed stationary for 2 seconds before ascending up into the sky. I saw this object through my sliding glass door (I live in apartments and the building across is about 20-30 feet away) I didn’t move when I saw this light. I tried to see if there were people outside afterwards, but couldn’t find anyone on their balconies. Looked for wind chimes/suncatchers/etc. didn’t see any that would reflect in any noticeable way. 2. When I was driving at night, getting home after some errands, I saw a bright, white, strobing light in the distant sky. From my perspective it was about the size of a pea and looked to be a few miles away. I can’t say much about it other than I noticed it while I was driving, then when I had to turn, the trees cut off my view (pine trees…grrr). 3. When I got home after the strobe light experience, I was headed towards my walkway when I saw this red glowing in the sky. It was in a V shape with the point to the left of where I was standing. It had 4 or 5 red lights on it that glowed dimly. It looked as if there was one light on the tip and 2 lights going each side. They weren’t strobing or anything, they just remained dim. The size of the object appeared to be about the size of a small jet and moved a little slow from North to South as if patrolling. It made no noise and looked as if it were only 2 miles away over the Puget Sound. I told one of my friends about it and she mentioned that it “might” be a secret military craft. I’m not sure, I don’t know. That is what I experienced. I don’t have pictures because I don’t own a working camera at this point in time (you probably notice my lack of images on the site). I will say that I was hoping for an unveiling of some sort. I don’t believe we require help from an outside force to make our world a better place, what we need is that outside force to come in and show themselves so more people will realize the dire situation we are in. Many people yesterday joked about the date and the predictions. Most were quick to call out “hoax” or “liar”...and this was as soon as 1 am on the 14th. This sense of “give me instant gratification or gtfo” upsets me somewhat. People don’t have anymore patience nowadays. Just because something didn’t happen yet, doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. Eventhough there weren’t any giant UFOs around, that doesn’t mean we can’t still react to our planet and try to save what life she has left. We need to be more informed. People won’t provide that information for us, we have to seek it out ourselves. Get informed, do your part. Even if it’s as simple as starting to recycle, or saving a gallon of gas a week…if everyone did just that much, as a whole, we’d be improving greatly. More ranting, blah blah. Stay informed, / Fade Edit: / Just found this out. The military bases in the area have been running “test flights” all day today. The flights started last night and will probably continue all day and maybe tomorrow. Another friend told me that they’ve been test bombing all day today constantly. Whether this is the military trying to find the “rogue” UFOs or trying to have a story to cover it up (or both) is neither proven fact or complete BS. This is just another aspect of the strangeness involving last night. After thinking about it, I did see a lot of planes flying around last night. I’d estimate about 50-75% more plane activity than usual. I’d also like to note that a lot of the videos I watched on YouTube have been taken down “by the owner”. I’m not saying there is a coverup, just another thing to think about. And yet again, there’s a story I’ve just heard about a friend’s coworker’s husband having an experience where he thought he heard something running across his roof (as if it was running and jumping roof to roof) and then hearing some kind of plane or helicopter overhead. I don’t have all the details on this one, but still an interesting story.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your indulgence is craved, that you might – when convenient to yourselves – pass by the Time Lapse – Long Exposure Photography challenge that was held by the Calendars R Us group. For let it be known that my timelapse image Pop! came fourth. This is a mighty achievement – gladitorial I might almost say – considering the fantastic competition. View the entries, my dear friends, for this small action shall reward you time and time again. Time, as they say, waits for no man (or woman or hermaphradite) but as this challenge shows, you can half stuff around with it to get some wizard snaps!

about 10 minutes ago my brother started to shout from the bottom of the stairs / “NOO NOOOO” his voice was full of fear, i never heard that sort of tone used before. i ran from my room to investigate, he was almost crying “NOOO NOT CHUFF, NOO!” when i heard the name “chuff” i knew something had happened to our cat. I saw my brother going to the front door, it was open, it was after dusk outside and the wind was blowing. i briskly reached the bottom of the stairs, my brother now in tears and sobbing “noo, nooo” I went to Rena, she was standing in the dim light with a cat in her arms, a dead cat. the wind was wild and Ian stood beside her. my brother collapsed on a garden chair roaring in tears. i could barely ask “WHAT HAPPENED?”, i just got a reply, “SHE’S DEAD ZARAH, SHE’S DEAD”. I broke down, Cal was crying, Rena was standing with the dead cat in her arms, blood dripping everywhere and i was crying on her shoulder. Ian stood and cursed the person who did it. The wind was still blowing wildly and we were standing with our clothes and hair blowing, bare foot crying our hearts out for the little cat, that didn’t deserve this. i touched its head and little blood droplets fell on my fingers. it made me cry even more. my mother told us “IT’S OK, SHE DIED INSTANTLY” but she was crying too and nothing could console us. my brother was angry. he stood up, tears and sobs and came to chuff to take another look. we all stood huddled outside the front door. it was open and the things inside the door were beginning to be blown around by the wind. our tears came in bursts, and cries too. then from sheer fright cal shouted “CHUFF!!!!” he sounded like he was shocked, i looked up from my mother’s shoulder, i saw a cat running in through the kitchen door. it was unmistakable. brown tabby marks. black spots and patches. it was chuff alright. she came back from the dead. my mother let a huge magnanimous laugh out of her and i threw my head back in laughter too. Cal went after her calling her like a baby, “CHUFF< COME HERE < COME ON CHUFF” Rena wasn’t holding chuff in her arms, it was tigger, out neighbours cat. She was holding the empty body of a little 9 year old’s cat. I carried the cat to their house, wrapped in a towel. I didn’t even put shoes on, i was crying for their loss, didn’t think. as i knocked on the door another burst of tears came rolling out even though i tried to hide it. i felt so bad for the poor animal. Chuff is alive. I can’t describe how I feel right now. I had prepared myself to face the death of my cat, I had EMOTIONALY prepared myself and then I realised that it was all a hoax of some sort. It’s the most horrible feeling ever. I love you CHUFF

In the last few years I’ve changed a lot! I used to look forward to things where now I just hate them! For example I used to love B days and Holidays, now when they are approaching I almost get depressed. I hate my Birthday’s I pretty much lock myself up and hide from the world. Christmas is a Joke, you spend all this money to make people happy and never even get a thank you. Thanksgiving, fucking sucks! Why do I need to give thanks, maybe I should thank god? For what giving me a horrible childhood, fucked up teen years, heart break, after heart break, as an adult. Valentines Day, yeah it makes me realize that everyone else in the world is happy, yet I’m miserable, and every time I am happy, it never lasts! I like New Years because I can drown my sorrows with alcohol! 4th of July, is a joke. It’s supposed to be “Independence Day.” Yeah it meant something back in the day, but now we are so far indebted to China and England, they basically own us. Easter, whatever I don’t have kids, no fun there. So yes I have turned into the Grinch! I realize that all this came on after my ex ripped out my heart, stomped on it, cut it up into little pieces, put it in a blender, and then flushed it down the toilet! 3 Years later I still can’t trust anyone, not even my friends… I’m incapable of ever really truly loving someone! So I ask myself, “Why Me?” all the time. Anyone have any suggestions? And don’t just say, “Get Over it!” Trust me I’ve tried!

Went to the Kruger Nasional Park and Mozambique. Kruger was better than ever! The animals were right next to the road, there was the hiennas close to the road with there little puppie! Adorable….untill they opened their mounths! The look they gave and the laughter is scary and I stoped shooting and put the window up quickly and asked my husband to drive off as fast as he can…! / The Zebra’s were amazing!! We visited a sanctury next to the park. As we were passing one of the holiday homes, I saw some activity next to the house. On arrival I dicovered that it was Zebra’s 4 or 5 of them. I got out of the car and started shooting close-ups and full lenght, then closer and closer…then I stopped shooting….one came closer, I put out my hand….s-l-o-w-l-y…she came closer…and sniffed at my hand…then licking my hand! The little one came closer too, he looked and followed his mothers example! I was in seventh heaven!! The others were more carefull and just looked from a distance. Never have I experienced nature so close and personal, it was a wish came true! / .....the rest I will share tomorrow!

(cross-posted to DeviantArt.com – http://jstengren.deviantart.com) My photography obsession began in high school… I took a lame photo class as an elective (this was Los Angeles, mind you) where we learned how to develop 35mm film in the darkroom. Assignments were ill-conceived and half-assed, at best. “Go take a picture of someone playing sports.” was one, “Take a picture of something with sharp contrasting lines.” was another. There were crushes to be had, friends to be made, and since it was the last period of the day… shortened school-hours to be had. On to college where my dad let me borrow his manual Nikormat SLR. That was an interesting beast. Manual rewind, shutters as loud as your bedroom blinds falling unexpectedly in the middle of the night… but wow, the photos were incredible. I lived in Humboldt at the time (see Arcata, CA), home of the redwoods, hippies, and mud. I took a few field-trips with my dad’s camera into the various hiking trails surrounding the city and experimented with the finer aspects of technical photography – namely aperture and shutter speed. I also fell in love with macro photography, abstracting the hell out of anything I ran into. I took quite a few nice fern shots w/shadows, dew drops, ocean shots, and the likes. After moving up here to Portland, I bought my first digital camera – a Casio Exilim subcompact – and visited my friend back in Humboldt. I told him, “Lets go somewhere cool for a photo shoot.” We ended up at this weird junkyard near the bay where someone(s) had left tractors, car bits, etc. This is how I got my start in urban decay photography. If you framed a shot just right, you could accurately convey the lonliness and isolation of these machines, standing alone in the Northern California coastal mist, rusting, and being slowly, steadily overthrown by the sands of time. I loved it. I purchased a couple other cameras after that Exilim, briefly joining the megapixel war frenzy, and eventually ended up at the Fujifilm F30 subcompact. This camera, my friends, is fucking amazing. If you ever want a subcompact that takes awesome photos, has full aperture and shutter speed controls, excellent night time capability, and low low noise… this is the toy for you. I’ve used the F30 for countless club nights, raves, outdoor events, parties, and random photography wanderings. Unfortunately, I eventually ran into a wall in terms of what I could get out of this camera. I wanted those beautiful shots I saw on Deviant Art and Flickr, with the saturated colors and near-absent noise. I sunk my tax rebate into my very first DSLR, a Nikon D40x, and I’m in love. No doubt, I’m absolutely baffled by the amount of setups and features available, but the quality of the photos is amazing. I’ve created my first working portfolio using this camera, and have also become intimately familiar with Adobe Lightroom – an excellent digital photo archiving/editing application. My very first gallery is on June 19th at a local pub called Green Dragon, and who knows what’s next! For now, I’m just gonna play around here on Deviant Art and find other like-minded photographers to chat with. If you have any hints/tips on how to find cool spots for urban decay style photography, let me know! Right now, I just pick a direction and drive… hoping to stumble across something good.

It all started on December 20th,2007. Larry Smith sat on the edge of his bed with his 2 best friends sitting on the floor.”Man,Larry i can`t wait for christmas.I think my mom and dad is getting me that XBOX 360 i`ve been bragging about all week.” One of the boys said to Larry. “Yeah, i think my moms gonna get me that Dirt Bike and Four Wheller i`ve been asking for.” Another boy said. ” What happened to you guys holiday spirit.Christmas is suppose to be about Santa Clause and the egg nog that you drink at parties.” Larry told them.”Come on Larry you know we stopped believing in santa clause a long time ago.” Travis said. “Yeah Larry you need to listen to Travis. He may not always be right but i agree with him on this one. All i look forward to on Christmas is the presents and spending time with my mom. It`s the only time of the year she can spends all day with me instead of just 10 lowsy minutes” Andy said.” You guys are probably right. But is that all you really look forward to on Christmas?” Larry asked”No.Not really i also like the parties i go to and seeing people i never met before.”Travis answered.Bright and early the next morning Larry got up made him some breakfast set at the family table and thought about what his friends said. Then a knock came on the door.Larrys big sister Jena rushed downstairs and pushed larry so she could get to the door first.”Who is it!!!!” Hollard Jena.”Travis and Andy can Larry come out?”They asked.Jena unlocked the door and said….... “It`s your dorkish friends”.
