In Yellowstone National Park this group of elk and some calves came down while we were at the end of the boardwalk.

Went for a drive up the Alpine Loop today and was rewarded with photgraphs of a young moose. The mother was no where to be seen. Newborn babies weigh 28 to 35 pounds and grow to 300 to 1,500 pounds.

Acrylics on canvas I was out for a walk in my neighbourhood recently on one of those unique sunny warm days here in West Clare in Ireland. The farm animals were mostly lying down in the fields which I passed. I came to a field in which there were only calves and I stopped for a look. They looked back at me. The picture remained with me so I got out my paints and brushes and this is the end result!

These hereford calves were spread all over the barnyard when I stopped to photograph this scene. The cows stopped whatever they were doing to walk over the fence to pose for the picture! Taken in Washington Township, Michigan.

The Moose (Alces alces) is the world’s largest member of the deer family. The Alaska race (Alces alces gigas) is the largest of all the moose. Always remember, never come between a cow and her calf. Her twin calves were browsing with her, the female calf is just out of the frame nearby. See more of this beautiful animal in my collection: / Moose Dream Shadows It is amazing how graceful and quiet they are. / The Alaska race (Alces alces gigas) is the largest of all the moose, occurring in suitable habitat from the Stikine River in the Panhandle to the Colville River on the Arctic Slope. Most abundant in recently burned areas containing willow, fireweed and birch shrubs, on timberline plateaus, and along the major rivers of Southcentral and Interior Alaska. Their colour ranges from golden brown to almost black, depending upon the season and the age of the animal. Newborn calves weigh 28 to 35 lbs and within five months grow to over 300 lbs. Males in prime condition weigh from 1,200 to 1,600 lbs or more. Cows weigh 800 to 1,300 lbs or more. Only the bulls have antlers. Calves are born any time from mid- May to early June. Gestation is about 230 days. Cows give birth to twins 15 to 75 percent of the time, and triplets may occur. In winter, Moose consume large quantities of willow, birch, and aspen twigs. Deep crusted snow can lead to malnutrition and death of hundreds of Moose and decrease survival of the calves. Information source: Wikipedia
Yes, in spite of all beautiful winter scenes I am longing for spring! When the young calves will be out on the rich green meadows again, when the birds will sing and the sun will be warm, short, when nature will be full of promise again! The Cheetah The fastest land animal in the world, the cheetah is a marvel of evolution. The cheetah’s slender, long-legged body is built for speed. Cheetahs are tan in color with black spots all over their bodies. They can also be distinguished from other big cats by their smaller size, spotted coats, small heads and ears and distinctive “tear stripes” that stretch from the corner of the eye to the side of the nose. Found mostly in open and partially open savannah, cheetahs rely on tall grasses for camouflage when hunting. They are diurnal (more active in the day) animals and hunt mostly during the late morning or early evening. Only half of the chases, which last from 20-60 seconds, are successful. Cheetahs knock their prey to the ground and kill with a suffocating bite to the neck. They must eat quickly before they lose the kills to other bigger or more aggressive carnivores. Cheetahs are also typically solitary animals. While males sometimes live with a small group of brothers from the same litter, females generally raise cubs by themselves for about a year. Height 2 ½ -3 feet at shoulders / Length 44-53 inches (tail length of 26-33 inches) / Weight 110-140 pounds Top Speed 70mph Lifespan 10-12 years Diet Gazelles, wildebeest calves, impalas and smaller hoofed animals Threats The cheetah’s future is uncertain due to a variety of threats. The biggest is habitat loss due to human encroachment. In addition, they often deal with declines in prey and conflicts with humans. There is also high cub mortality due to predation by carnivores like lions and hyenas that are in competition with the cheetah, as well as genetic inbreeding which leads to abnormalities.

When he plonked himself down in the middle of the shot, I saw an opportunity I couldn’t resist. ( : Canon 400D, pp in photoshop cs2
Moose calves are born with their eyes open, if they live through their first month, it’s most likely they will survive to become an adult. Moose are herbivores and they are the largest antlered animals of all ~ with the males only growing them (rarely a female with hormone imbalances will grow them as well). The moose has no enemies except the grizzly bear and humans. / Moose medicine invites you to explore new depths of awareness and sensitivity within yourself and within your environment. Photograph taken in an undisclosed place in Alaska (as is) by my brother, who wishes to remain anonymous.
