  • Standing on the shore of the Richelieu River in Iberville, Quebec, I had the most beautiful view of the town of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, as the sun was setting and casting a rich golden and coppery glow. It had been a warm day, and there was only a very gentle breeze to disturb the surface of the water, ever so slightly.

  • Featuring Gibson Mill a National Trust Property Gibson Mill, built for cotton-spinning in 1800, is ahead of us. (In 2004 the mill is being renovated and it will re-open sometime in 2005 and will include a sustainable visitors centre with exhibition and community spaces, café and toilets for people with disabilities and baby-changing facilities.) But this will not be the first time the mill has been used by people having a bit of fun. The mill was situated here because of the readily available water power and the unfinished cloth taken to nearby Heptonstall. During the nineteenth century access to easy transport and raw materials became more important and coal replaced water as a source of power. By the end of the century buses from the station at Hebden Bridge brought visitors to the mill for roller skating and tea dances. People even walked all the way from Oldham to have a good time It may be that Abraham Gibson built his mill on a site that might have previously be used for industrial activity. The building without a roof (2004) to the left of the mill used to be the weaving shed and when a new floor was being excavated, an archway and store was found which were not on the line of the existing building. Archaeologists think this could have been used for iron smelting – there is a plenty of evidence of charcoal burning elsewhere in the valley. The roof at Gibson Mill also provides a home for bats. A recent survey indicates that seven out of the eight British bats can be found at Hardcastle Crags, making it an important site. When the building work is completed it may be possible for wheelchair-users and pushchairs to get across the river to get a better view of the mill but going any further will still be difficult. At present the river can only be crossed by a temporary bridge with steps and by stepping stones.
