When I was preparing to shoot this nude series I knew I didn’t want to create images to stimulate the male libido. I was seeking a psychologically expressive female figure for myself. Some of the feminist literature that has influenced my thought in this area is a book by Linda Nochlin “Women, Art, And Power And Other Essays”. In this book she reaches an all time high in feminist rhetoric when she photographs a male nude holding a tray of banana’s held at knee height….!! So refreshing! / _______________ / This Image “Imprinted Woman”. Photo montage printed on Kinwashi. Three images montaged in Photoshop: Nude, Chinese calligraphy pattern, and cut radish (the vegetable) pattern. The final image was printed on an Inkaid prepped Kinwashi paper. 11’’ x 14”. The radish “paper” is very interesting; a small sheet about 6×8 inches of thinly sliced radish rounds pressed together into a translucent sheet. I found it at Hiromi Paper in Santa Monica http://www.hiromipaper.com/store/home.php.

I can do hair now. / I was doing this all week. My pesky job kept me away from it for long periods. But one sleep deprived headachey weekend sorted it out. I don’t know what time of day it is now. I tried a coloured one. I’ll try again. / See the reprise here Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. My explanation. / I tailored this to someone using a few details about her as the different elements. / Her name begins with L and she works as a builder. / I needed a straightedge to do the hacksaw blade. To neglect the absolutely straight line would have been unacceptable. / A hacksaw blade fitted the bill quite nicely, I don’t have a ruler. Might be an idea to get one. / I like things to look as real as possible so I looked on the net at hacksaw blades and found a lovely orange one with the words Bi-Metal on it. / I decided that’d work. The Times A was such a nightmare I had to find a suitable replacement. / The flower was going to make a pentagram but once I started doing the petals transparent I had to drop the idea and devote that patch solely to the flower. / I went a bit Vista on it. I dont really see a lot of vector based Islamic Art so i thought i’d do some myself! This is the kind of thing i would have liked to have seen in my college and uni days. Would have made a good poster for when i was livin in the halls of residense! Expect to see a lot more of this style! First time ive used nothing but Illustrator. I learnt a lot about Illustrator doing this and loved it!! Reads: “Bismillah ir rahman ir rahim” / Translation: “In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind.”

Image by photographer Glennis Siverson, www.glennisphotos.com. This was captured at a park in Beijing, China, where an elderly man had just finished painting watermarks on the sidewalk. In China, there are many people who practice calligraphy in public places, using water as their ink and the ground as their paper. Very large brushes are required and they look a bit like a giant felt tip pen. (For perspective, the characters in this image are about a foot in length.) Although the writing is temporary since the water evaporates, it’s an informal public display of one’s work, and an opportunity to practice calligraphy, which is taught in the schools.
