This is our Calico cat named ‘Marble’ and her kitten we called ‘Spare Parts’ because she was identical to her mother. I did not know until recently that Calico cats, with their orange, black and white coloration, are almost always female. So are black and orange tortoiseshells. Why? The answer has to do with genetics. Every cat has 38 pairs of chromosomes; half of the pairs are from the mother, the other half is from the father. Within every chromosome there are thousands of different genes. Every female cat receives one X chromosome from her mother and one X chromosome from her father, while a male receives one X chromosome from his mother and one Y chromosome from his father. Within the X chromosome is a gene for coat color. In calicos and tortoiseshells, one X has the black gene; the other X has the orange gene. White coat color is associated with a completely separate gene. At conception, the kitten is a one-celled organism, which divides until there are millions of cells that make up the final kitten. Calico Cats facts / ____ I created this image starting with a photograph of our Calico cat and her baby. I used Micrografx to add a brush effect first. Then I added a watercolor effect. Next I used Paintshop pro to add a texture effect. Then returned to Micrografx and added special lighting and a seamless tile effect. Thenk I added an impressionist brush style. The image was completed in Micrografx by adding a watercolor to complete the artistic painting through digital art results. Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. This sweet little kitty is no longer with us. At the tender age of 4, she developed an unusual lung problem that would have required her to go through too much suffering; so we had her put down. She was the sweetest, most wonderful kitty I’ve ever known and I miss her dearly. R.I.P. Smudge (a.k.a. Mudgie)

These 2 are special to me in many ways;they keep the barn free of mice and snakes and they are always entertaining us with their playing! / “Claira” the white kitty, belonged to him during his first marriage. She left with his dogs and left her cat! / “Giada” was found in a friend’s attic at 6 weeks old and was dehydrated and hungry and scared. My hubby had her brought here where she grew up in our barn. / They are both spayed and only worry about how hot it is outside and if we left enough food out for them.
