Green tree frog – Litoria caerulea. / Jabiru, N.T. ’ 03 ‘
This miniature springtime-in-the-bush shot was made along the Flower Bowl Walk in Kattang Nature Reserve at Dunbogan, about a forty minute drive south of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. The flower is a Dianella caerulea (Blue Flax Lily) and the teeny-weeny beetles are Chauliognathus tricolor (Soldier Beetle), both native to Australia. These beetles are the main pollinator for the flowers. Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, +10 dioptre screw-on lens, Macro, f/4 @ 1/40sec, ISO100, Low powered flash, Tripod, Timer. / Photoshop CS. Little Blue Heron {Egretta caerulea} Everglades National Park.
Taken with Canon PowerShot A570 IS on macro setting Passion flowers are believed to represent the suffering of Christ on the cross and the mysteries of the Passion. The 17th century monastic scholar, Jacomo Bosio, describes ‘the column rising in the centre of the flower surrounded by the thorn of crowns (and) the three nails at the top of the column. In between, near the base of the column is a yellow colour about the size of a reale, in which there are five spots or stains (stamens) of the hue of blood evidently setting forth five wounds received by our Lord on the cross.’
These very pretty little blue dainty dangling flowers are Dianella caerulea (Blue Flax Lily) a very common native in my part of the world and a delight to photograph as the morning or afternoon light has a great effect on them. They can be a difficult subject to shoot though due to the habitat in which they grow and that they flower randomly along the stem, many times with a relatively big gap between flowers. Finding one with a lot of flowers blooming at the same time is a rarity. The shot was made along a track in the Diamond Head area of Crowdy Bay National Park, Laurieton, NSW, Australia on a lovely spring morning. The subject was well lit by the morning sun shining over my right shoulder and a dark, rough tree trunk provided a very good natural background.
