The Cereus Night Blooming cactus is a splendid flower to behold. This one opened up around 11 p.m. and filled the night air with an intoxicating fragrance. It’s amazing to think that a lowly cactus plant which is not particularly attractive could produce a flower of this magnitude. The ugly duckling that produces an elegant swan! This side view is part of a series I’m adding to the RB portfolio.

I took this photo on May 26, 2008 here in Northern California…......this is actually a type of cacti…..I’m not sure of the name, but very very similar to the Christmas Cactus which I presented in Pink Ladies Dancing…........I hope you enjoy this…...the color is untouched…...only a bit of distracting background has been removed for a more pleasing image…..... / ___ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission. Taken in my greenhouse,this Selenicereus cacti flowers at night.The bloom is about six inches in diameter and opens only for one night.It is also beautifully scented.

I gave this Christmas cactus to my mother a couple of years ago; it’s huge now! This is only a small detail of that gorgeous plant which blooms just in time for Christmas each year.

I volunteer in the Green Valley (AZ) Gardeners’ Arid Garden. The trichocereuses had blossomed once already this spring, but yesterday we could tell that they were about to bloom again. When I went down this morning to check on the progress, about 10-12 cacti had bloomed. Photographed with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ 50. Called a fishhook barrel cactus, it generally has brilliant orange flowers in the summer followed by yellow fruits which resemble small pineapples.
