A Cabin in the Smokey Mountains. An American dream.
This was taken in a peculiar log cabin just outside the Yosemite in California. I couldn’t resist acting a little stoopid for the cam.
16×20 oil painting of apples forgotten in the field.
Beautiful view on Cades Cove Loop in the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. I love this old barn with the red roof. Other works in the Cades Cove Collection: Please enjoy these other images:
We came down a dusty dirt road….sometimes there are things that I just have to photograph.
The Tipton-Oliver Place – Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park USA “The Tipton Place” has been featured by the group “Smoky Mountain Masterpieces” 7/08. This grand old cabin belonged to Johnathan Wade Hampton Tipton. Colonel “Hamp” had a carpenter build this home after the Cival War. Hamp was a veteran of the revolutionary war. The land came from Tennessee Land Grants in 1821 aquired by his grandfather, William Tipton, better known as “Fighting Billy” for his heroism in the Revolutionary War. President Andrew Jackson was his friend and said that if he had a company of Tiptons, he could “lick the whole British Army”. Although Hamp never lived in the house, his two daughters did. Miss Lucy and Miss Lizzie were schoolmarms in the cove in the late 1870’s. The homestead eventually included a smokehouse, a woodshed, corn crib, blacksmith shop, cantilever barn, and an apiary for bees. William Tipton owned a great deal of the cove by 1836. He deeded much of the land to friends and family, including John Oliver and Peter Cable. The three of them established the Primitive Baptist Church. The home went on to be owned by Jim McCauley in 1879, and then by John Oliver’s grandson William Howell Oliver in 1887. William served as an ordained minister of the Primitive Baptist Church from 1882 until the time of his death in 1940. His family lived in the home until the land was aquired for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Other works in the Cade’s Cove Collection: Companion Piece
This was taken on the same night as the triple rainbows, and was originally lost in the shuffle. Luckily, I rediscovered it. There were many little cottages or cabins like this scattered along the shoreline of Alaska’s Inside Passage, but like this one, most of them were somewhat isolated from the other cottages. The transport of choice to reach these cottages was mostl likely by boat.

I began my slow journey back to art by attending a weekend retreat based on “The Artist’s Way” with Cheryl Evans in Avon Park, FL. It was held in this old camp now available to rent. / A History of Camp Wingmann / It was a wonderful weekend of art, meeting people, fun and beauty in this wonderful spot. Casio Exilim I was inspired to put up Cajun music that I found from this movie “Southern Comfort”. I’m putting up the trailer to the movie and another for The Balfa Brothers who played the music. Today I was planning to go into the Marysville area and check out how some of the waterfalls have faired after our recent bush fires. Despite being opened to the general public this week the road I wanted to use (Woods Point Rd) to get into the area was not, so after a quick rethink I instead visited another waterfall on my list and after a huge dirt road detour ended up at Tanjil Bren near Mt Baw Baw. The waterfall has no name and I only had a large scale map with very little detail to find my way but after innumerable stops to clear rocks and branches from in front of my 2WD I was stopped in front of a huge tree that blocked the track. The land nearby dropped away steeply and I could hear the rush of water so I figured it must be it. After donning boots and gaitors I descended very steeply through the scrub finding a track just as I hit the river. To my amazement the track soon emerged at a quaint log cabin. An enormous amount of effort had obviously been made to get the materials in and build it coming complete with two cabins with huge log walls, corregated tin iron roof, fireplace, river rock pavers, food, first aid kit, clothing and bedding and a small room which appeared to be some kind of sauna. I presume it is on public land and illegal but obviously so few people ever visit that it has remained under the radar (no I didn’t find a nearby plantation but…). Continuing down stream I explored the three tiered falls as best I could in the steep sided canyon which had an amazing flow of water even at this dry time of year eventually returning to the car via the much easier track. Elated from exploring and seeing a sight that it appears only a select few know about.
