MOSTEIRO DA BATALHA / LEIRIA / PORTUGAL At a distance of 12 km from Leiria, we find Batalha in the banks of the Lena River. / The name and the history of the town are the history of its Monastery of “Santa Maria da Vitória” (St. Mary of the Victory). Three years had passed from August 14th 1385, the date of the Aljubarrota battle, when the Monastery’s construction began in fulfilment of the vow made by King John I to the Virgin Mary. / The king had promised to build a monastery if he was successful in that historical battle. This was a decisive battle for the consolidation of the Portuguese independence and also for the establishment of the Avis dynasty. The Monastery, UNESCO’s World Heritage, was built not on the battlefield, but 3 km away, in the valley of the Lena River, to allow the presence of a monastic community. This magnificent building is the Portuguese final Gothic greatest monument, one of the first to receive “Manuelin” art decoration and one of the most beautiful European churches of the late Middle Ages. / Not far from the entrance of the Monastery stands the Equestrian Monument of Nuno Álvares Pereira – Army Commander of the Kingdom. Dating from 1968, the statue honours the heroic commander that defeated an invading army three times its size, in the Aljubarrota Battle. This horse, Rivendell’s Jack Sparrow, belongs to my brother and sister-in-law, who own Rivendell Farm in Alabama. Jack is a Connemara pony. His sire, Grange Finn Sparrow, was winner of the American Connemara Pony Society HALL OF FAME PERFORMANCE AWARDS in 1995, was known as a Champion Jumper in Ireland, and is considered the “apex” of Connemara jumping breeding. He is sire of the Canadian eventer, Windswept, Sparrow Cappuccino, and many more.

I would like to thank Waking Dream- Author: Robert Dye http://www.redbubble.com/people/robartdye/writing/1006181-waking-dream#comment-4176075 These dreams etched within a winding wrinkle, / I wake to feel the fleeting visions faintly linger, / Like the vague crescent white of the moon, / Dissipated against the brilliant blues of day. / So curious to know this other realm of consciousness, / That’s plucked from the branches of reality, / Like leaves slipping away with rushing winds, / Descending into currents of so many wild streams, / Soaking their dried veins, increasingly saturated, / Drowning their bodies into the rough, grainy silt. / The weight of water oppressing once precious, / Fragile blossomed memories of towering trees, / Burying them into the ever deepening, dark mud. / All of these once thriving sprouts of existence, / From deterioration become recycled, regenerated, / To the miniscule shreds of minerals and nutrients, / Which await extraction by other far reaching roots. / While in the slumber of the cold, barren, windblown tree, / I wonder, does it dream and long to be anew, full and free?

During a relatively peaceful 2002 protest against the World Bank in Washington, D.C., anti-war demonstrators began to change the situational climate of the march. Tensions between protesters and police, who were expecting a violent demonstration, began to rise. Police began to arrest everyone that they managed to surround inside Pershing Park, guilty, as well as innocent bystanders alike. In relative anticipation of the police’s reaction, this young man wrote the telephone numbers of civil defense lawyers on his arms before the demonstrations even began.

Leopards are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Carnivora, family Felidae. The leopard is a large carnivore of the cat family, Panthera pardus, widely distributed in Africa and Asia. It is commonly yellow, buff, or gray, patterned with black spots and rings. The rings, unlike those of the New World jaguar, never have spots inside them. Black leopards are commonly called panthers, a name sometimes used for all leopards. They are not a distinct species but merely a color variant caused by melanism, or excessive pigmentation. Close inspection reveals the typical spotting, which is obscured by the darkness of the background. Leopards are somewhat smaller than lions and tigers; the largest males are about 7 ft (2.3 m) long, including the 3-ft (90-cm) tail. Leopards are solitary, largely nocturnal, and good climbers; they hunt both on the ground and in trees. They prey mostly on small animals such as monkeys, rodents, and birds. Leopards are found in much of Africa south of the Sahara and in parts of Asia from Israel to Korea and Indonesia. They are listed as threatened or endangered throughout their range, owing primarily to loss of their natural habitat and to illegal killing for Oriental folk medicine.
