The View from the moon
by MeachA poet I knew, / Said the view from the moon / Had left him feeling very small
A song I wrote back in the 1980s when I was performing at ‘Poems and Pints’ nights in pubs in the valleys of South Wales under the ‘stage’ name of Stop Tap Dai / I found a tape of me ‘singing’ it today and thought I’d share it. / It was written at a time when the Butterfly effect was first mooted and also a time when people first began to leave flowers at the scenes of accidents and, in Northern Ireland, at the scenes of bombings. / Wish I’d found it when the Challenge Cafe was doing it’s butterfly effect comp – but heh that’s life Copyright D Meacham 1984

Papillon is the French word for butterfly but I think the process of becoming one is a fine metaphor for the struggle to be yourself, especially for those who, like someone I love, wrestle with emotional disorders or special challenges.

Black Butterfly
by Alice McMahon WhiteBlown in from far off dust Astral soul Dressed in stardust Black butterfly
I had a close encounter with black butterflies recently. Not so unusual in summer I suppose, but I don’t remember seeing this particular type in Chicago, maybe it’s due to our changing weather patterns. The odd thing was that I had just found a photo of a black butterfly online at RedBubble, had favorited it and commented on it. Then a black butterfly fluttered around me several times while I was walking that same afternoon! It happened again a couple of days later, this black butterfly flying in loops around me as I walked. Odd that the only black ones I saw, also seemed to notice me as well! Almost like they knew of my transformation. So, that inspired my second poem, “Black Butterfly” This is the charcoal drawing that goes with the poem.

I have been inspired to jot a few lines down yet again when I saw this beautiful picture from CarrieGlenn brilliant collection and again like a lot of work on RB, I absolutely fell in love with it. It has a mysterious beauty about it a natural innocents. It is almost as though Carrie puts a part of herself into her art with every brush stroke she lays on canvas or with every manipulation she makes in a creative Photoshop package. And I could go on and on writing but these short few lines is enough for now. It started my mind off on yet another writing journey and this is the combined efforts from Carrie and me. Thank you for looking at our collaboration please feel free to comment on her beautiful artwork and my writing if you have the time. Thank you.

This is the first piece of poetry I’ve written in the last fifteen or so years, if memory serves. Still needs a bit of work to tweak the language, I reckon, so I dare say this will change over the next few weeks. But it’s a start. If not a very cheerful one!
