Acrylic, ink and pencil on paper. I have spent quite a bit of time studying butterflies not only for their beauty but for their intricate detail and amazing structure.
Acrylic on Plywood, 60×90cm (approx). / I’ve gone bigger with my work and transitioned to using acrylics only (no chalk). This artwork is really a practice piece featuring the now legendary Happy Cat Jac making his third attempt at catching an elusive butterfly. Note the ‘cracks’ in this artwork are a feature of the surface of my piece of plywood. I think they add something to the work, rather than detract from it… call it ‘contemporary rustic’ :-) Watch the video of me creating this artwork.

2007 digital painting. / For my door at college =)
This butterfly is from an original watercolor and was spotted at a butterfly farm by a friend. The rich color of the wings with the beautiful green leaves made it so vibrant
I took this photo this past summer when my daughter and I had her Bugville Butterfly pop-up treehouse. We had put fresh flowers in the bottom, and sprayed them with sugar water. This is a painted lady butterfly; and yes, to ease all your hearts they were let go after they matured! Thanks for viewing my work!!! Painted Lady Butterfly panasonic fz50
Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) – Devon UK Canon 50D / Canon 300mm F4 IS plus 1.4 x Extender / 1/320 / F13 / ISO 200 / Fill Flash -2 2/3, Tripod / AV Mode, Evaluative Metering dialed to -2/3 Text adapted from – http://www.britishbutterflies.co.uk/asp/species.asp?vernacular=Painted%20Lady The Painted Lady is found throughout the UK even as far north as the Shetland Islands. As a migratory insect it is a common sight to see large numbers of rather worn individuals which may have arrived in the UK from as far afield as North Africa Central Asia and the Middle East. Because of its migratory abilities and strong flight, the Painted Lady can be seen in almost every environment in the UK but the best places to see Painted Ladies is in a flowery location, in full sun where Thistles grow or where Common Knapweed is in flower. The pupae of the Painted Lady is very similar to other butterflies in the Nymphalidae family having a metallic gold jewel like appearance. The pupae will wiggle rapidly if disturbed. The pupae hang suspended from the larval foodplant or nearby vegetation and remain in this state for between 7 and 20 days before the Adult emerges. Between 5 and 24 hours prior to the adult emerging from the pupae the pupae case becomes translucent and the wing coloration of the Adult can be clearly seen while the general overall colour of the pupae is grey/blue in colour. Adults can be seen in the UK in any month of the year but the peak usually follows the main migration into the UK around June. These immigrants breed in the UK and the resulting fresh (Salmon Pink) individuals can be seen on the wing from early July. The Painted Lady may be seen in any habitat although they do tend to congregate in open sunny areas where there are plenty of Thistles which provide food for both adults and larvae. Common larval food plants include Thistles (Cirsium spp. and Carduus spp.) and Mallows (Malva spp.) Common Nettle (Urtica dioica) and various other plants are also sometimes used.
painting of a girl with butterflys in the woods / watercolor on fabriano 8×11
The Painted Lady group of colourful butterflies comprises the subgenus Cynthia of the genus Vanessa in the Family Nymphalidae. They are well known throughout most of the world. / In general, the Painted Lady is a large butterfly (wing span 5-9 cm (2 – 2 7/8 in)) identified by the black and white corners of its mainly deep orange, black-spotted wings. It has 5 white spots in the black forewing tips and while the orange areas may be pale here and there, there are no clean white dots in them. The hindwings carry 4 small submarginal eyespots on dorsal and ventral sides. Those on the dorsal side are black, but in the summer morph sometimes small blue pupils are present in some.
