*My work was featured in the group Video Montage / ( Thanks Muscular Teeth and Butchart ) Excerpt from “Abigail’s Friends” written by Anthony Hedger illustrated by Carrie Glenn. ...“I think we better go back now.” She whispered to the butterfly. / “Why?” The butterfly asked. “It’s only my friends and they are having a special tea party just for you, come on and I’ll introduce you to them.” / “Er, ok, if you think I’ll be alright?” / “Of course you’ll be alright.” The red fox called to her. “Come on your tea is getting cold.” / So for the next two hours Abigail sat with Mr. Fox, Mr. Bear, Miss Rabbit, Ms. Blue bird and a hundred different butterflies and had tea and cake and chatted as though she had known them all her life. She gave each of them a big, big hug after and thanked them for making this the best birthday ever. / “Er, just before I do go home, how did you know it was my birthday anyway?” / “You could say a little bird told us.” The bear said gently and they all began to laugh…read more / CarrieGlennStudios.Com / My Zazzle Gallery

Why ‘Butterpig’? I don’t know – I just like the sound of it. ‘Butterpig!’
Charcoal on mylar drafting film, 22×18” The drafting film is translucent, so I have used a moonstone Canson pastel paper under the film for color. I work on the frosted side of the paper for tooth. The mylar lends a lovely soft effect, beautiful for rendering the translucence of skin. It is a tricky surface to work on, just a flick of the finger brings you back to the clean surface. I load my fingers with charcoal to get the soft gradations of tone. There were several unusual spiritual moments for me while working on this self-portrait. One was a near out of body experience while on a walk in the park, which spurred me to write my first poem in 30 years. A few days later, I started seeing black butterflies. Not so unusual in summer I suppose, but I don’t remember seeing this particular type in Chicago, maybe it’s due to our changing weather patterns. The odd thing was that I had just found a photo of a black butterfly online at RedBubble at http://www.redbubble.com/people/knightingail/art/1336726-1-black-beauty Then a black butterfly fluttered around me several times while I was walking that same afternoon! It happened again a couple of days later, this black butterfly flying in loops around me as I walked. Odd that the only black ones I saw, also seemed to notice me as well! Almost like they knew of my transformation. So, that inspired my second poem, “Black Butterfly” and I decided to incorporate a black butterfly into the drawing. The piece was made to fit a vintage distressed frame I found at my local antique shop. The Poem: Bemusing muse Black butterfly Came through the ether Mystical wings Encircled me along the way Enraptured on a summer day Music painted on the sky Black butterfly Blown in from far off dust Astral soul Dressed in stardust Black butterfly Draw me perfect Emergent from this coal black shell Wet wings spread in joy to stand Transformed Flawless at the artist’s hand Evanescent passion lies In our wavelengths intertwined Black butterfly Never caught Light gently in the mind Bring luminous thought (c) Alice McMahon White 2008

The symbolism of this piece is quite rich, and in further researches I found out that I ended up making relations between all the representations without consciously being aware of it. The Chemistry is about inner alchemy and how the power of transformation manifests itself through Will. That’s basically my version of the ancient illustrations on alchemy in which we see a dragon-serpent “wrapping” a maiden. In my version, for artistical reasons, I decided not to draw the serpent involving the maiden’s body, but putting her closer to the background, and showing her body changing according to the colors of the environment – which are the colors of the four elements. The serpent is a representation of the unconscious forces of Will. The maiden raises from a pond (the beginning of all things, regeneration, new birth) that has been formerly muddy and still (the dark green color at the edges), and now is made clear by the power of fire (strength, courage, will, passion), or the dragon. A bunch of monarch butterflies come out the pond. The butterfly is one of the symbols of the Gemini sign (Mercury) and the classical representation of regeneration and rebirth. The maiden’s hair turns first into green grass from which 3 lotus flowers (another symbol of rebirth) arise, and then into fire. The dragon’s head show itself among the profusion of hair. The four elements are clearly present, in images and colors: Fire (dragon’s head, the top of the picture, the color red), Earth (grass and leaves, the color green), Air (butterflies, the color yellow) and Water (the pond, the color blue). It’s part of our journey as human beings to face muddy waters throughout our life. But to remain stagnant in them is our choice. We all have the inner strength to being born again, to rebuild ourselves – we just need to accept the changes and look toward the future. We are the alchemists. colored pencil on bristol board / 17×8.5

Its wingspan is 2.2 to 2.4 in (5.6 to 6.1 cm Adults range from Mexico through Panama. G. oto visits common flowers like lantana, but prefers to lay its eggs on plants of the tropical nightshade genus Cestrum The red and purple striped caterpillars feed on these toxic plants and store the alkaloids in their tissues, making them distasteful to predators such as birds. They retain their toxicity in adulthood. The same alkaloids that make them poisonous also are converted into pheromones by the males, which use them to attract females. / Camera: Canon 400D / Lens: Canon Macro 100mm / /
