I have been watching and waiting for one of these for a month or so now – one of my favourite native flowers. There is something about their woolly (flannel?!) leaves which I find so unusual. Shot in the Mt Kuringai National Park – Kalkari Reserve – on Bobbin Head Road (Sydney Australia). (Actinotus helianthi) / Flannel flower, a common name applied to several herbaceous plants of the Australian genus Actinotus, belonging to the carrot family. / It is a short-lived perennial, living up to four years in its natural environment. It grows in full sun or semi-shade. They flower between late September and early December. Of the 15 species of the genus, the best known and one of the most attractive, is the Sydney or Eastern Flannel Flower, A. helianthi, which ranges from the far south-east of NSW into south Queensland, and as far north as the sandstone tablelands inland from Rockhampton. It is an erect subshrub, up to a metre tall, with rather brittle stems and soft silver-grey leaves having a dense covering of pale woolly hairs. The daisy-like or star-shaped flowers are up to 8 centimetres across with an outer ring of long cream petals (bracts) which are flannel-like in texture.

Photo taken in Maandowie Bush Reserve, Loftus, NSW, Australia In 2002/2003 this plant was discovered in Maandowie Bushland Reserve, Loftus during bush regeneration activities. Formal identification was not done due to the regeneration work load. In 2004 it was found growing in the Menai area, about 5 kilometers from Maandowie. It was sent for formal identification and was confirmed to be a hitherto unknown species of Hibbertia. There are about 60 known specimens growing in the Menai area and 90 in Maandowie. Due to its limited range and the small number of plants it has officially been classified as endangered.

I really should now what type of bush this is from but at the time of writing, for the life of me I can’t remember, You know whats its like, sometime late tonight I will be awoken by a brain burst and yep I will have the answer lol. Anyway this was shot on a fallen tree alongside the Bibbulmun Track South of Dwellinup. whist waiting to pick up a group of clients. I suppose I also could have called it the finger etc but wanted to be original lol.
