  • I have been watching and waiting for one of these for a month or so now – one of my favourite native flowers. There is something about their woolly (flannel?!) leaves which I find so unusual. (Actinotus helianthi) / Flannel flower, a common name applied to several herbaceous plants of the Australian genus Actinotus, belonging to the carrot family. / It is a short-lived perennial, living up to four years in its natural environment. It grows in full sun or semi-shade. They flower between late September and early December. Of the 15 species of the genus, the best known and one of the most attractive, is the Sydney or Eastern Flannel Flower, A. helianthi, which ranges from the far south-east of NSW into south Queensland, and as far north as the sandstone tablelands inland from Rockhampton. It is an erect subshrub, up to a metre tall, with rather brittle stems and soft silver-grey leaves having a dense covering of pale woolly hairs. The daisy-like or star-shaped flowers are up to 8 centimetres across with an outer ring of long cream petals (bracts) which are flannel-like in texture. SOLD medium framed print to an anonymous buyer 4 May 09 Thank you!!

  • Proceeds from the sale of the image will go to Bush Heritage Australia which is involved in conserving our forests and landscape for the future generations to come. / —-—-—-—-—-—-- One of my last ones from my last trip to Botanical Gardens / This one was hanging out on top of the footpath asking to be clicked….. / Had to oblige…. • Christmas beetles (Anoplognathus) belong to the Scarab family and include flower chafers, cock chafers, and fiddle beetles. This one was spending his summer holidays at Cosy Corner, (near St Helens, Tasmania), on a Melaleuca bush. I liked the contrast between the mauve and green. Velvia scan.

  • This picture took a long time to create. The flowers (Chamaescilla corymbosa) are very common in the bush near my home, but they are also very tiny, so it is difficult to create a frame free of “clutter”. I wanted the orange flower to be an out-of-focus background contrast to the main blooms, while having all the stamens sharp. Lots of time lying down with the tripod in amongst the jackjumpers! Velvia scan. “Dance with me!” was featured in the group A Beautiful Blur.

  • This is my tribute to Muntazer al-Zaidi. The legendary journalist who threw his shoe at George W Bush during his farewell visit to Iraq. Clearly it is based on Banksy’s “Flower Chucker” stencil which is based on a photo from the 1968 riots in Paris. I’ve tried to keep it faithful to both Banksy and Muntazer by illustrating his head as close as possible to the original press conference image, in the style of “Flower Thrower”. I also illustrated the shoe to fit his hand just nicely and added a bit of definition to the fingers. Love to know what you think. Good riddance George Dubbaya. Muntazer al-Zaid may be the thrower, but you certainly are the tosser. / / / / / / /

  • While I was chatting on the phone with my Yorkshire friends, Jesika and Jim, a lovely Gulf Fritillary was flitting about the garden where I was sitting. I captured this image of the butterfly and would like to dedicate it to Jesika and Jim in thanksgiving for their faithful friendship and for Jesika’s inspiring photography work with butterflies; she is the queen of this type of photo and she inspires me to appreciate the beauty of these heavenly creatures. God bless you both, Jesika and Jim! From the U.S. Gulf coast to the U.K. this one’s for you!
