Irish Gardaí Síochana take a bus instead of a Black Maria van. I got on this bus on George’s street, or some part of that street that has several names, in Dublin and after sitting down turned around to see oodles of Gardai. / I had my camera. / I was cheeky. / I turned and asked whilst showing the camera if I could take a picture. Reluctantly they agreed some with humour others not so much. They had their hats off so I shot one without and realising that this would never occur again I asked if they would put their hats on. “Ah go on off with ya,” said one. “Hats on”, barked the sergeant/captain from the back of the bus. Hats went on, “Smile please”, I said. Smiles were fixed. “Could you all look straight ahead please?”, I asked. Eyes were pointed forward. “Could you move just a bit to your right?, Yeah you. Thanks” “Take the photo!” I heard. I did. Here it is. / 1995 On a public bus George’s Street – Dublin

This traffic cop stood out a mile in her orange rain gear in New York City! As you can see, I shot this just as a Greyhound bus was going past, which helped to create a nice contrast. Taken with a Canon EOS 450D. Title provided by my partner, Paul Wilkin This image has been favoured 30 times. I started writing short verses for a series of paintings: “Eighteen Images in Search of a Poet” by Lorenzo Castello. / If you haven’t seen the Tanka verses, also written for this series by Jane Solomon, they are well worth a read, as are a number of other lovely poems by various artists which you’ll find as comments on the images. / I decided to join my verses together as one long and semi-cohesive poem, the meter is not consistent because I wrote a number of these as stand alone verses and had already posted them as comments. I have tried to tie them in and I think it works after a few reads to get the rhythm sorted. I have also recorded it right here I’d like to thank Lorenzo for the inspiration and for permission to include his wonderful images here.
