Ever get the feeling that everyone’s staring at you when you get on that bus to work every morning? Well, I did (before I shed the shackles of the day job and became a freelancer at least!) and that’s what inspired this painting – commuters on the top deck, always curious to see who’s entering their domain.

The challenge I faced was to get a dramatic effect with light trails without losing background detail. As such I didn’t want to wait until it was dark. It was late afternoon in December and the light was fading…and vehicles had started to put their lights on….just what I wanted. There was a lot of trial and error to set the best exposure time and to synchronise the shutter. I settled for about 1 second. Another problem was the passing crowds on the bridge where I was standing with my monopod. I was constantly being jostled into the path of the traffic. And then I had the waiting for a bus to come along….they are never on cue! Ah well…it turned out alright in the end.

Looking through the bus window on the way home, I see this playful movement of light and dark shades, between leaves and branches. It is a moment to be captured. Real image with no additional painting… The light painted it on my camera’s ccd sensor! I have set the camera on manual zoom, manual speed and aperture, so that the motion can be capture on shutter release. Behind the glass window of a moving bus, I hunt for the right angle of sun and the right tree, and follow throught the target like taking an image of a sport player. All about timing and a bit of luck! Love to see critiques and comments. All welcome. ‘Inspirational Series’ card by Karin Taylor Where is Red Dog is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper using ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. The original painting was inspired by the legend of ‘Red Dog’, aka ‘The Pilbara Wanderer’ of Western Australia. Red Dog was a loyal friend and stout companion to all who knew him. In this painting, the girl on the skateboard represents us in our search for love and acceptance and ‘Red Dog’ symbolises that quintessential spirit of the friend, whose love and acceptance we all yearn for.

Proof that I do in fact take photos with people in them (sometimes). This is the reflection from a passing bus at the intersection of Nathan Rd and Argyle St, Mongkok, Hong Kong. had to crop the original right down to get this image, so unfortunately file size is rather small, but I quite like the effect here, so I figured I’d upload it.
