  • The power of fire shown in an image taken at a deliberate burn of an old derelict building at Mt Burr Football Oval in South Australia. Used by the Country Fire Service as a training tool! The blue light is the reflection off of the emergency services vehicles parked nearby!

  • Taken in Rāmava, near the river Daugava, in the outskirts of Rīga, Latvia.

  • The Burr Trail is a paved and off-road backcountry route extending from the mountain town of Boulder down through Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument into Capital Reef National Park and then to Bullfrog in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. This path is off of Scenic Byway 12 which is one of the most spectacular roads and shouldn’t be missed, especially in fall. The road goes all the way from Red Canyon (near Bryce Canyon) to Captial Reef National Park. When you get on the Burr trail (named after John Burr), you will have great views of the Henry Mountains and lower Capital Reef! If you have the time, there are some amazing hikes which bring you into The Gulch and the Circle Cliffs. This was taken off of a wall which seemed to have interesting etchings on it and illuminated in orange hues. I couldn’t figure out how to capture this with my macro so I used a 300mm lens and stood back.

  • A couple of burrs on my carpet. My first actual macro. And I kinda like it…..

  • Misty haunting morning this morning, sitting in a pine plantation at Mt Burr in the Limestone Coast area of South Australia. Last hints of fog lifting as the sun rose towards a clear blue sky. Canon 400D 18-55 lens with ND4 filter. Three shot HDR converted in Photomatix and cropped to size. Damn it was cold!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes their back! The ladybirds from Mount Burr made an emergence yesterday with thousands massing in a number of spots within the forest. This group were huddled together in their hundreds on a power pole just above ground level. As with all things in life there is always one or two who stand out in a crowd. Canon 400D 18-55 taken at night with aid of a speedlight. Processed in Photo shop CS3.

  • Yes, the ladybirds often seen on my site have made a recovery and were in their thousands last night in the forests at Mount Burr in South Australia. This group kept emerging from the darkness towards my flash as I tried to get some night time shots of them huddling together on a power pole. The bolt joining the frame and cement together made a point of focus for the shot and a small platform for them to climb on Canon 400D 18 -55 with a speedlight. Processed in Photoshop CS3.

  • Yesterday I reported the swarming of thousands of these beautiful creatures in the Mount Burr Forest in the South East of the State. This lot were clustered around the nut on a bolt holding the side plate onto a powerpole. Interestingly I went back today and nearly all of the tens of thousands had disappeared back to wherever they came from. What a magical twenty four hours this was. Thanks to Biggzie (see his site for some great images) I can now tell you that they are the: Common Spotted Ladybird / Harmonia conformis Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with speedlight.

  • An image to match yesterdays post where another group of ladybirds were at the other end of this bolt. Two days ago I reported the swarming of thousands of these beautiful creatures in the Mount Burr Forest in the South East of the State. This lot were clustered around the nut on a bolt holding the side plate onto a powerpole. Interestingly I went back yesterday and nearly all of the tens of thousands had disappeared back to wherever they came from. What a magical twenty four hours this was. Thanks to Biggzie (see his site for some great images) I can now tell you that they are the: / Common Spotted Ladybird / Harmonia conformis Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with speedlight. ””If we ever get this nut off – anyone got a spanner?”

  • Another trip out to the swarming of ladybirds that I have been reporting on at Mount Burr South Australia. This time we took them flowers!!!!!! The thousands I have posted on recently have dwindled to small groups of twenty to thirty and are slowly moving on. They climbed aboard our flowers which gave us opportunities to take some images a little different to those uploaded over the last few days. I promise the ladybirds shots will stop soon but they are just such brilliant works of nature that I can’t help keep going back whilst they are there. Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with two stage extension tubes and speedlight.

  • Out early this morning to watch the sun rise through the fog in a pine plantation at Mt Burr – Limestone Coast South Australia. Certainly worth the cold to see the beauty as the sun tried to force its way into the forest. Natures strength showing the small re-growth forcing its way up amidst the towering trees. Canon 400D 18 – 55 with ND4 filter. Processed in Photoshop CS3.

  • The ladybirds have returned in significant numbers at Mt Burr again. This is a small cluster on dead and dried ferns. (if you look closely you will see them underneath as well) Always a pleasure to watch these little beauties crawling around in their thousands. Canon 400D, 18 – 55 with two stage macro extension tubes and speedlight. I am often asked, “just how thick are these?” Well the photo below is just an example of how thick they settle when they arrive!!!!

  • Travelled to another section of the Mount Burr Forest today and found single ladybirds on nearly every section of fern. Dark and unlit back section of the forest where minimal lighting existed and these little beauties made every attempt to be where that limited light shone through. Could have spent hours watching them crawling to and fro through the ferns…..... Canon 400D Sigma 120 – 300 macro.

  • Again this morning as the storm cloud moved away towards Mt Muirhead in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. BEST viewed large. Great morning with boiling clouds and darkened sky’s before the sun finally rose. Canon 400D 18-55 three shot panorama.

  • Back watching the ladybirds from Mt Burr again today. As the sun finally came out after days of crisp cold and rain they began to move about, climb and eventually take off for places unknown. Watching them today I couldn’t help but think of how many lessons they could teach. This one showed me that when you get to the edge – sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and fly away to unknown adventures…..... What amazing creatures they are! Canon 400D 18-55 with two stage extension tubes. Processed in photoshop CS3.

  • Back watching the ladybirds from Mt Burr again today. As the sun finally came out after days of crisp cold and rain they began to move about, climb and eventually take off for places unknown. Watching them today I couldn’t help but think of how many lessons they could teach. This one showed me that sometimes the highest mountain we actually have to climb is to get out of the rut we’re in. Time to sprout my wings…... What amazing creatures they are! Canon 400D 18-55 with two stage extension tubes. Processed in photoshop CS3.

  • The final in this series.. Back watching the ladybirds from Mt Burr again today. As the sun finally came out after days of crisp cold and rain they began to move about, climb and eventually take off for places unknown. Watching them today I couldn’t help but think of how many lessons they could teach. This one showed me that often you just have to keep on flapping and eventually it will happen…takeoff… There are many defining moments in our lives. Let them define you or flap hard and define them yourself….. What amazing creatures they are! Canon 400D 18-55 with two stage extension tubes. Processed in photoshop CS3.

  • Ladybirds again from the Mt Burr area. More flowers taken out to them recently and they blend so well with the colours. Shot taken within the Mt Burr Forest, South East South Australia. Canon 400D 18-55 lens with three stage extension tubes.

  • There’s a message in this for all of us. When you reach some peak in your life you can either go back down or simply spread your wings and take a leap of faith. This little fella took off moments after I got this shot. One of the Mount Burr ladybirds from an early shoot with flowers from our garden in the background. Canon 400D 18-55 lens with two stage extension tube.

  • Burr Oak Kreme Ice Cream Stand & Hotdogs / NIKON D-60 18-55 mm Nikor Nikon VR Lens FEATURED IN UNWANTED, ABANDONED, AND SAVED THROUGH PRESERVATION, NOW 2009 This is a photo I took near Burr Oak State Park in Glouster, OH. This was at the top of the entrance of one of their many boat docks along the river. This park is part of the Wayne National Forest. Situated in the valley of Sunday Creek, the Burr Oak area was inhabited by Indians and, later, by settlers who found an abundance of game animals and the resources necessary for survival in the Ohio wilderness. Coal, one of Ohio’s most important mineral resources, was mined here for many years • As mining operations expanded, mining towns grew and prospered • Few of these mining towns were as notorious as the village of Santoy. Many colorful tales were told of life in Santoy • In the true spirit of frontier life, so the story goes, a gunfight was once held over a $20 debt • The street was cleared as the two participants met for a showdown • The ensuing battle left both men lying in the street—one dead and the other critically wounded • The “Old West” came to life in Ohio when the coal company payroll was robbed by bandits who made a horse-mounted getaway through the town. Countless other tales live on, but Santoy could not • A fire in 1924 destroyed the coal tipple and several businesses • The loss was so devastating that just three years later the second mine shaft shut down • In November 1931, the nineteen remaining voters decided to abandon the town • Today, only the church, the town’s first building, still stands as a reminder of days gone by, which Burr Oak Kreme sits across the street from. In 1950 Burr Oak Lake was created by the construction of the Tom Jenkins Dam across the east branch of Sunday Creek • Two years later, Burr Oak was dedicated as a state park.

  • Another older image from my ladybird adventures at Mt Burr South Australia. A lone ladybird crawling around the cup of a small flower that we took out to the site. The ladybirds have all gone now, hopefully they will return in their thousands again some time soon. Canon 400D 18-55 lens with two stage spacers.

  • Cleaning up some older folders from previous ladybird shoots at Mount Burr South Australia. These ladybirds mass in their thousands here at certain times of the year. Taking flowers out to them results in them climbing up and down petals and leaves in hunt for food. Canon 400D – Sigma 70 -300 macro.
