I think I just might have come up with a brilliant idea. / Is anyone hooked on the TV show Heroes as much as I am? It is a show about people who have super powers / There is a character on the show named “Sylar” / He is supposedly the bad super hero. / He can absorb other peoples powers by eating their brains. I went on a shopping spree yesterday and bought lots of cards. My IDEA (ok kind of a stolen idea, buts it my idea with a twist) I eat all of your cards and absorb your artistic powers. / I will report back and let you know how this goes. / I am thinking I just might need some ketchup or something. / Also I didn’t really feel like finding everyone and trying to eat your brains. / Kind of made me gag a little bit. Not sure I could handle that. Anyways…...... / ALL BOW TO ME. I CANNOT BE STOPPED. / Ruler of the Bubble / I am gonna eat all your cards. MUHAAAA MUHAAAAA LOL. Thought I would share with you all of you how warped my mind is. / I have issues.

I wanted to share a funny experience I had with my Brother-In-law back in 2005. / I also consider him one of my best friends. We always have fun whatever we do. Vincent Vartorella – who just joined redbubble a while back is my brother-in-law in case you don’t know. When we go places we love to take our cameras. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we are doing. I guess you could say we share the same interest in photography and enjoy it. / We screw around all time and we are always sneaking pictures of each other and having fun when the other isn’t looking. We probably have more pictures of each other than you could imagine and we just laugh. We went on a all day golf trip and I took my Sony Cybershot small camera with us, it was new at the time. / We used the heck out of that camera shooting every shot you could imagine. / It was a blast. We were heading to the 17th green and I said “Hey I have an idea, why don’t you go up on the green and I will hit a shot towards the green and we can see what it looks like on video. We never used the camera for video. So we wanted to see how the quality was. I dropped a ball about 100 yards from the green and he went and stood directly by the flag. / Of course he had to add his commentary to the shot which made this hilarious. Go Here / To see what happened. To this day we still laugh and can not believe this happened. / What are the odds? So one day I posted it on You Tube for fun. The funny part is its kind of popular I have a ton of hits on it.

Its a technique that I would suggest everyone try or learn. Go Here / if you have not yet seen it. There are several ways to achieve this. / I use photoshop elements and find it the easiest to use for doing this. / - Trace the images that I want to leave color using the lasso tool (Can take a long / time but its worth it) / - After you have traced everything you want to leave color goto select and click inverse. / - By clicking inverse you are now on the outside of the images that you traced. / - Click on enhance and adjust color then adjust hue/saturation. / - Turn the saturation all the way off to achieve the black and white. / - Then you can go to enhance and click on adjust lighting then goto shadows and / highlights to adjust your black and with levels. / - Click on select then click deselect and you image should be finished. From there you can go in and play with the saturations to bring out more color or whatever you want to do. Its a technique that you would be surprised can save any image you take if you are creative. So if you like go check out the Image and leave a comment of what you think. / I am here if anyone has any questions I would be happy to help anyone out if I can.

For some reason, people go a funny shade of green when one starts talking about Dodging and Burning …. nothing to fear at all. I’ve just realised that I haven’t got any little images to insert in this tutorial …. I’ll make them later. Dodging and Burning is not difficult at all, when you realise that 20 low opacity strokes are better than one huge Dodge or Burn stroke. D&B is used to create precise shadow/highlight and can certainly add enormous amounts of lift/punch to an image. Most people would duplicate the layer to do some D&B on, and this is fine until you are working on a 10/15/20mb file and everytime you duplicate the layer the image size doubles. Unless you have a huge amount of RAM, your computer will slow down and sometimes even freeze. Is there a solution …. of course there is, its photoshop. So you’ve been working on an image, and naturally taken snapshots along the way. Now you decide that you would like to do some D&B. Click on the new layer icon on the bottom of the layers palette. Go to Edit>Fill>50%gray>click ok and that’s it LOL, nah, only kidding. Change the blend mode of this layer to soft light. Go grab the Burn tool (example), select whether you want to burn the highlights, midtones or shadows from the top menu and I would suggest quite strongly that you use a very low opacity – around 10% to start out with. I usually use a very soft brush for this and set the size according to what I’m going to be doing. The sheer beauty of using the 50% gray layer set to soft light is that you can simply turn the layer on and off to view your progress – don’t like what you’ve done … trash it and start again. Use exactly the same principle for the Dodge tool. Yet another way to D&B. Click on the new layer icon on the bottom of the layers palette, change the blend mode to soft light (without filling it with 50% gray), select your brush tool and make sure the foreground colour is set to black. Lower your brush opacity in the top menu bar to round about 10% again and start brushing where you want to Burn (darken) the area. Do exactly the same thing, only with white as the foreground colour to do some Dodging (lighten). Yet another interesting take on the above is that you can D&B with colours. Try it … grab your f/ground colour as red (example), check the opacity is down and Dodge or Burn away with that colour. Perhaps even pick a dark red (example) from the image itself to use as the Burn colour. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. The sheer joy of photoshop is all the fun you can have with it.

I’m sure many of you are aware of a chap named Jeff Burns and are very glad to see him back around on the Bubble in full force. I have been investigating his sabbatical from the Bub and have some shocking revalations to share with you all. Jeff’s old avatar looked like this shot: I then discovered by posing for the same shot That Jeff Burns was actually only 2 foot 8 inches tall! He worked at the secret hide away chocolate factory of Wally Winker situated behind the Giant Eagle in Ohio. Jeff worked with all the other Oompa-Loompas and Lepricorns But this was just what he did for a living, it was not his downfall. His downfall came when he picked up his first IR lens. I’ve seen IR shots, Naomi Frost does them to perfection Cool as ice and soothing. Jeff unfortunately ordered his IR over the internet and when it arrived in the post he read the address label… JEFF BURNS / In a small box under the tree / Ohio In his excitement he didn’t realise it was his name but thought it was an order. So Jeff grabbed his matches and set fire to everything, shouting Jeff Burns, Jeff Burns, i’m a twisted firestarter! The photographic results were amazing But the trail of destructiction made him a wanted man and he hid (which is very easy when you’re only 2 foot 8 inches tall) whilst things quietened down a tad. So he’s back As the little Gay Pirate in search of the pink bandana, making up for setting fire to everything by using his super powers To freeze water and pour it over the fires he’d previosuly started He’s also back as Bono from U2 in a vague attempt to look taller Here’s to you buddy, looking good

The Gateway to hell….. Just when you think it is safe to go back outside and inhale deeply, I get the phone call….the farm is on fire AGAIN. / Last week, someone tampering with bee hives (and smoke machines) on our property set fire to hundreds of acres of forest and farm….. / I find it difficult to believe this is yet another accident…..the irony is that today’s paper had the story of last week’s fire on the front page, and now this has happened. I am not sure if you want to see images, but here I have added some anyway, that tell their own story. This new fire started five hundred meters from the old burn site, where hundreds of acres burned last week. Could it have been a spark or burning underground grass roots…..or something more? / / My heart breaks for my brother and family and the cost of this latest fire. Fortunately this one was nowhere near as bad as last week’s fire, and was contained within about five hours. Again, I watched as within minutes, neighbours and volunteers were out with tractors and machinery and water tankers, helping fight the fire. Bless them! Too close for comfort…. / Last week’s fire cost dearly – the insurance company informs us that “Farm Insurance” does not cover fencing. After paying farm insurance all their lives, my family get told this. I shake my head sadly at such blatant greed and despicable treatment of trusting and hard working farmers….. apparently fencing is not classed as “above ground improvements” and therefore not covered as part of the farm. Every fence was destroyed in last week’s fire, to the cost of many MANY thousands of dollars, and replacement will cost more than that in labour, especially seeing as how no farm can operate without fences, especially boundary fences on highways. Replacement is critical. / / / So if you have land or farm, perhaps it would be wise to check your insurance policies and make sure that every little detail is covered…....the local insurance people inform that fencing was never automatically included in any farm insurance. / Don’t wait till it is too late to find out, better check now that your cover is indeed for what you think it is. / That is, if you can even bear to deal with insurance companies anymore. /

It has been overwhelming to see the instant support and compassion fellow Aussies have shown to the victims of the fires in Victoria. The money and assistance coming in is simply amazing. And I feel such warmth and kindness flowing in from all corners of the world! Thank you so much to everyone for your open hearts and willing hands! The shiny side of humanity is really evident at times like these. But there are millions of silent victims that are being overlooked by the majority of those who are helping or raising funds, and they are the creatures of the Australian Bush, and the domestic animals, left burned, scarred, and without homes after the fires. It is an horrific fate for them. For those who were killed, their suffering is over and they are in a better place, but for the many who survived and are still out there, desperately in need of veterinary care, water, food, and just some kindness…. their need has never been greater. It is up to us to recognize and help them in whatever way we can. / Donations of money to the various wildlife organizations is one way to do this, if you cannot go and help in person. A group of wonderful people here on Redbubble have set up a Wildlife Appeal site similar to the Phoenix Appeal where Redbubble members can donate pieces of art with the proceeds going directly to the wildlife fundraisers. Please check out this site and try to donate a piece of art. The creatures need us to help them too, and they don’t have the media to bring their plight to the world as the humans do. They suffer in silence. And it breaks my heart. I have pledged the proceeds of sales of all my art from my InAWE pages to this cause and hope that others might do likewise. If you wish to donate art, just bubblemail the wildlife appeal and get the address to send the images to. They do not have to BE of wildlife or animals…any artwork will be greatfully accepted…... then just help by spreading the word to others about this second means of supporting those whose lives have been burned by the fires. Thank YOU!

Well folks, I would hate to think the hosts of the Wildlife-Appeal sit on their thumbs all day long and thought you might like to see the Sales we have made in this short space of time.! / Please bear in mind that the thumbnails are of images of cards, prints matted prints, laminated prints,T Shirts… etceteraetceteraetcetera..lol! So for all of us Members who are striving to make a difference to the Wildlife-Appeal I decided to copy and paste all of the sales thus far. Thankyou everyone who have purchased and also thankyou to the fine works uploaded for the Appeal. Of course we need to sell more, and if anyone wishes to come and join us,you will be made very welcome. / The More the Merrier. / Thankyou one and all,for the amazing achievement so far. More Please Thumbnails of all the sales made in just over 3 weeks :) Thankyou to all of the buyers and to the Artists who have been so kind in uploading the images for the wildlife-appeal. / There are Calanders, greetings cards,T Shirts and all manners of prints purchased, but we still need more to make this Appeal really rock. We can never have enough works to aid the wildlife-appeal,and so please donate any work for this ongoing Charity Appeal. / Many many Thanks to everyone for doing a sterling job. / Best of luck, and thankyou once again. / We appreciate everyone. / In the words of Oliver Twist:”Please Sir,I want some more!”

As many of you who have read my previous journals know I am with a few other huge hearted photographers and artists, donating the proceeds from sales from our work at the wildlife-appeal / The agency we are helping, the Wildlife Rescue and Protection Inc (WRAP), has some animals that need to be “adopted” / The caregivers (carers) that are trying to help these animals with the injuries they sustained from the bushfires that raged thru Victoria and surrounding areas. I have been emailing with Racheal on how we can help get these animals adopted. Right now there are only 6 left, but she did state there will be more to come. This is how it would work. As with any sponsorship with children, zoo animals, and pets, you would recieve a certificate of adoption, updates, and photos every three months. / If you cant do this yourself, I cant plead with you enough to pass this on, eventually there will be someone that can help out with the animal survivors of Black Saturday. For those of you already involved with adoption programs, please pass this on to your friends and everyone else. I will be contacting local businesses and some schools in my area to see if they would like to adopt one of these amazing animals, you can do the same. To learn more about this, please go HERE / From Rachael, WRAP, the wildlife-appeal, every single person that is helping us with pledges and donating their work and myself. / Thanks so much…just pass this on.

You have to love PayDay and I am very very happy to report making the first donations to WRAP from the wildlife-appeal account. First we all want to thank Everyone for donating their beautiful work, the buyers who bought things to help us out, and of course the people on the Wildlife-Appeal group, who have started contacting us to make their pledged donations on behalf of the wildlife-appeal. Without everyone helping out as they are doing, this donation to help those animals who are still fighting for their life from the bushfires of Feb. 7th, 2009 wouldnt have happened. / I didnt realize the currency exchange when I put in the amount of the donations, so this was done in three parts to get to the amount for US dollars that was switched to AUS dollars. Really need to get myself a currency exchange chart around here. / From what was sent, it totaled up to $275.00 AUD from the wildlife-appeal account. / The donations sent from people who donated their proceeds totaled up to $68.00 AUD / Bringing our total to date 03/05/09 to $343.00AUD I think this is an outstanding start to the appeal we have all chosen to participate and support. Everyone should feel proud and feel like they did, have and Are making a difference in helping! This cause by no means is over. We still need to get the word out. As the fires in Austalia seem to die down, it doesnt mean all is over and done with. There are many who still need our help. Many animals and people. Luckily for the human side of this tradegy the outpoor of help has been amazing from all around the world. But we cant forget our silent victims, who will be wondering where their food is, where their homes are. It will take months and probably years until their life is back to “norm” / So please pass on the word for this cause to everyone, anyone you feel is interested. Every bit of help does make a difference, even if it’s being discussed over a cup of coffee. / Thanks to Everyone who has made this happen, without all of you this wouldnt have gotten started! So leave this journal with a grand feeling of accomplishment. You Have and Do Deserve it! To those who want to help out we are always accepting more art work of all kinds, not just animals. Thank you so much from the wildlife-appeal :) Reciept copies from all donations made to WRAP (my address information will not be copied so some of that is missing) :) This is a note that was written to WRAP on behalf of the wildlife-appeal and the WLA group…... / This is from the wildlife-appeal account, this is one of the first donations made from the actual account created with artist’s work on Redbubble donated to sale for profits to help the cause of the wildlife who were injured in the bushfires of February 7, 2009, known as Black Saturday in Victoria Australia and surrounding areas. This is how I shot – Washout The lighting was not very good the shot was in a wooded area around 10am in the morning. / Taken at The Brandywine Falls in Northfield Ohio My Camera is the Canon Digital Rebel XTI 400D and I used a Sigma Telephoto 28-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Autofocus Lens / Shot was taken on my tripod / Using a wireless remote Used the Shutter Priority Setting / TV = 2 sec / AV = 36 / ISO 100 / Focal Length 115 mm / Used the Mirror Lockup setting / Used the Noise Reduction setting Processing was adjusted the shadows and highlights by darkening the highlights and lightening the shadows / Also did some minimal saturation to the entire photo I will admit I wish I could go back in time because it is also great to be using a Neutral Density Filter….. I have just began using them and it makes a huge different on long exposures. This particular shot worked well cause it was very cloudy and dark Also a Selective Coloring Details Here
