'Burberry Girl' HEAL Africa Hospital, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
by Melinda KerrUS$4.28–US$114.00
A wierd contradiction happens in Africa. People are so very poor, the only clothes they can get are those given away by charity or sold for a pittance by second hand dealers. Such organisations or traders get their clothes ultimately from the charity bins you and I donate to. Therefore people living in abject poverty wear outfits with brand names emblazoned on them such as: Timberland, Nike or Ralph Lauren. The same names people in the west pay a lot for. Ironic? Yes. Amusing? Yes a little. I came across this beautiful young girl in the ruins of broken lava, homelessness and chaos. She was wearing a light blue dress and carrying a burberry hand bag. Classic. And there’s a trucker cap. / Hey, doin’ good needn’t mean you can’t be cool at the same time. I thought I lost this design but I just found it on a memory stick in a back pocket of some jeans stuffed in a garbagebag in a moving box!!! / It’s the very first of many gasmasks which later became my top selling shirt ORDER NOW! or die looking like sh t / / The message in this designs is that if we keep f cking up our planet like we are doing today, gear like this is what they will be showing at Fashion Week before we can say SHI…... It made me smile when I found it, hope it does the same for you…cheers! P.S. I’m trying to brake a pattern by showing this in creme, but I still think it looks sweet on the army…so don’t worry, I’m still the same old Schytso!

It reminds some of tartan, and me bit a little bit of fashionista (as those who know me wouldn’t say!), of burberry. But really, it’s layers of stripes and cross stripes-can’t help any connection! I was a little bit inspired by steve’s drips (not that I hadn’t just used drips in the last couple of paintings! eg the fish) / -just to keep going with it as I really want to develop my abstract abilities-it’s such an art! I love layers and textures and want people to feel like they can touch the paintings. (therefore, they are textured and coated with a veneer which makes them easy to clean!)

Once “Elements of Burberry” (as named on this site!), it has made a miraculous transformation into “Weaving Light”. I like it better now. Though I love to paint layers and layers…so we’ll see! Again!
