The Huangpu river is higher than streetlevel, and so is kept at bay by flood walls which double as the promenade of The Bund. The Suzhou river mouth at the right foreground was a popular place for gangsters to dump corpses during Shangai’s jazz heyday in the 1930s. / My short film Shanghai

This imposing stone structure sits at the confluence of the HuangPu River and Suzhou Creek in Shanghai – it’s a typically communist monument, with stone carvings of hammers and sickles and so forth, but it’s hard to deny the beauty in the geometry of the thing.

This street in the Bund in Shanghai is typical of the type of architecture that the Bund has to offer. This scene in particular however sets that dark mood that is often synonymous with megacities, and indeed was the vibe given off that night.
