I seem to get my share of creepy and nasty bubblemails and emails. Thankfully not all that often, but often enough. I have always used two tactics with such people. The first is to reply to them “I don’t think that was an appropriate email to send, but seeing as how you do, you won’t mind me publishing it with your email address on my profile.” While this works well as a scare tactic, it doesn’t prevent them from moving onto another victim. The other tactic is to report the offending bubblemail to redbubble using the link provided and let someone objective review it and act. Today I got an (in my opinion unprovoked) email that said: “You are so disgusting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” This is just the latest. I’ve had much worse: untalented, slut, idiot, you should be ashamed, f words, revolting… the list goes on. Heck, I’m the first to admit when I’ve pushed someone’s buttons wrong but I’m only quoting ‘out of the blue’ type mails here. Anyway… I’m on a tangent. My discussion questions are: What do you think is the best way to deal with people who bubblemail or email nasty things? Do people actually use the report button? And if not – why not? Any good ideas for how to tackle situations where people are not as lovely as they first appear? Where does this type of behavior become bullying or harrassment?

My usual disclaimer: This is just my opinion folks. I’m not legal advice, a psychologist or even particularly well read on the topic. All this stems from personal experience and keen observation. It’s unfortunate, but some people see the internet as their chance to behave like complete idiots, total sleazes or to rocket off their opinions to people who just don’t care. And some people seem to think hiding behind an alias and making rude comments online is actually a ‘good’ way to pick up chicks. These people can seem completely childish or stalker-ish or predatory. But they only have as much power as you give them. Jo’s Golden Rules for dealing with creepy, irritating, clingy or irrational people Rule One: Take the log out of your eye first / Did you just write a provocative political rant and now people are giving you a piece of their mind? Did you call someone a nasty name, or make an inflammatory comment? Did you ask for a critique and didn’t like what someone said? While freedom of expression is one thing, consequences to your actions is another. You may not want to admit this, but if you give people the irrits, or flaunt your saucy bits all over the place, some people will want to exercise their freedom of expression too. Yes, there is a line where it becomes unreasonable or wrong, but consider where this line is as a first step. Rule Two: Ignore them / If they bubblemail you, don’t reply, if they comment on your stuff, ignore it or delete it without a mention. Nothing drives an attention seeking person to boredom faster than when they can’t get a rise out of you. It’s like what we say to little kids at school “If Jimmy is calling you names, you just walk away from Jimmy and don’t look back” Childish behavior calls for childish measures. Rule Three: Report Them (but keep ignoring them) / The only thing less fun for these sorts of characters is when they are not only getting zero attention from you, but also have the authorities on their back. Bullying & harassment is against RedBubble’s user agreement and can be reported to admin using the links provided around the site. In fact, most sites with a social aspect have similar policies and reporting procedures. Don’t be afraid to use them. Ongoing serious stalking or threats to harm you are matters for your local police. If anyone indicates that they know where you live or are coming to get you, the local police will be much better equipped to protect or advise you than a website administrator on the other side of the planet. Rule Four: Prevention is better than cure / Use websites for what they are intended. In this case RedBubble is a place to share your creativity and connect with other artists. It’s not a dating site, reality TV experience or personal ranting blog. Behave online like you would face to face. And be aware of what personal details your are making available to the whole world. I love jung… carl jung that is… I have read lots about his study into the human personality and psyche. what if… a piece of artwork was so awesome that the person viewing was shocked speechless… what if they needed to express that they were affected so strongly by the talent of the artist… what if the only thing that summed it all up was ‘supurb’, or ‘beautiful’.... those words might be differently sounding in the inner voice of the commenter compared to how they feel when you get them… what if… a person is so shy or they are not the outgoing big mouth and find it difficult to express themselves in words (in fact that’s why they are a visual artist)... does that make them nasty because they receive comments and don’t give them… In short I have seen so much insensitivity and bullying in this community in the last week or two that I can’t help but say something… you can call me what you like for expressing opinion but that’s exactly what everyone else has done… I am so sick of the journals being full of negative attacking bullshit… Please try to be tolerant… If this was a real environment and we were all in a paddock… would you be a lynch mob brandishing pitchforks because people don’t do why you scream at them to do… Get over it… if you get a comment that doesn’t sit well, just be mature and move on… Is it worth stirring a bunch of wasps to swarm like a plague on a minority group? Think deeper than you are… Because it looks to me that people are getting attention by being mean at people who they ‘assume’ or ‘think’ are being insincere. NOT ONE OF YOU HAVE ANY ACTUAL EVIDENCE THAT PEOPLE DON’T MEAN THEIR COMMENTS… you just look nasty to me…

  • Manifesto For Pain Management and Self Healing
    by Charissa May Borroff

My definition of pain is tortured nerves that deprive health and happiness e.g backache, depression, stress, tinnitus. There is physical…

These implements of healing; ANIMAL RESCUE, CESSATION, IDENTIFY HARMFUL NEGATIVITY, RELAXATION, RESPECT FOR ONESELF, RESPECT FOR ALL LIVING THINGS, PUSHING ONESELF, TRUSTING ONESELF, / CONNECT WITH NATURE, CONNECT WITH POSITIVITY, POSITIVE SYMBOLIC MEANING, POSITIVE SYMBOLIC ACTIONS, CONSERVE ENERGY, RECORDING YOUR PROGRESS, when activated by meditation, creative work (all of the visual arts, drama, dance, writings, good food, and music) and also by incorperating these tools into everyday life. There is no going back once this journey is started. I need to shine the torch back through the tunnel of pain that I’ve been through. There is a way out. Based on my experience of emotions and health being linked. I have written this manifesto for many reasons. My Manifesto has elements of alternative practices for healing which I see as most benefical and relevent to my healing experience. A simple bit of information can solve a big problem sometimes. Just one little moment of connecting and thinking. As simple as that. It may be placebo but hey it works! In the last month I’ve attended some public talks and have taken notes from The Dalai Lama’s visit to Nottingham Arena. I’ve met life coach Fay Hartwell, sound therapist Nicola Kelshall, Mark Graham a druid, a Elaine Mein a hereditory witch, Robert Hawk and Anam Gemma both shamans. I can see that the essential part of healing is firstly about the power of thought and allowing the body to deeply relax to experience soothing sensations. Dealing effectively with negativity and embracing positivity as much as possible will strengthen the connection with the self,. Body and mind. When you suffer terribly it can make you desperatly want to leave the painful body behind to go somewhere peaceful. All of the genuine alternative healing practicioners work with the intention to get you to feel happy and safe in your own skin again. The experience of a painful illness is a traumatic and powerful thing. The mind is a powerful thing and needs powerful positive experiences to communicate the intention to heal. Nothing to do with hippy dippy mumbo jumbo but a practical intentional management of the mind and body. Things like sensation, visualization, compassion and intention are essential componants of a positive healing medicine. This manifesto works to supply some key suggestions of going about guiding the power of thought to concentrate on healing. This is the foundation of which I base my therapeutic creative artwork sessions on. But also to record what I have found useful to myself and act as a reminder. I hope you feel like printing this out and keeping as a guide so that you can find empowerment and help in this too. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Last week I was forwarded a quote: / “Perfect normal person + Internet = Irrational Idiot” I think it’s worth pondering this for a moment. We are all real people, with all the normal thoughts, feelings and insecurities you see out in the real world. I treat forums like a party full of people. I don’t spread rumors, shout out nasty comments or gang up on people. This sort of behavior is bad enough when done discretely but it is extra humiliating when done in public. Forums are public places. I’m glad to say that the overwhelming majority of us on RedBubble do the right thing and play nice. Let’s work together to keep it that way. Support is available: Report bullying bubblemail or comments using the links provided or contact support@redbubble.com Jo

Thought it could suit many purposes as there are lots of bullies and bullied ones in this world.

Ewe might already know that wearing iGlasses for the first time can be very stressful. Although I assume that ewe are not one of those shallow people who is overly concerned about what others think, ewe might still know what it feels like to think that there might be some talking happening behind your back. HOWEVER, unlike “eye glasses” from our childhood years, when ewe have a beautiful set of “iGlasses” ewe can be completely confident that if there is ANY talk behind your back, it will be only envious people and they are saying only good things… honest!! Ewe can trust me on this one :) :)
