There were about four young gorillas which were all trying to get him of the top of the mound – it was such fun to watch them play. To spend an hour with Mountain Gorillas is one of the best wildlife experiences you can ever hope for. They captivate you with their eyes and you become lost in the moment. WILD AND FREE / / On the last morning of our Arctic trip we had a few hours to spend in Longyearbyen before our departure. We went for a walk along the shore and came across these Arctic Terns. Your time with them goes so fast you are left just wanting more… / / / Unfortunately, Mountain Gorilla numbers are small, with only approximately 700 left in the wild. The primary threat comes from forest clearance and degradation, as the region’s growing human population struggles to eke out a living. (Antarctic Peninsula) Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice reduces vital food sources, such as krill. / / Gentoos are now listed as nearly endangered on the IUCN Red List. / / / / /

More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hunt! King Penguins hanging out at Salisbury Plane on South Georgia . / / This is one amazing island that you all must try to get to, if you don’t mind four days in rough seas on a boat that is!!! But it is truly worth it…. / / This image was taken at a place called “Salisbury Plain”, where there are approximately 250 000 penguins! WILD & FREE Duma – the Swahili name for cheetah, can weigh between 110 to 140 pounds and have a lifespan of between 10 to 20 years. (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / Listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in 2008 / / The known cheetah population is approximately 7,500 adult animals. Additional areas where cheetah status is poorly known are unlikely to raise the total to over 10,000. Given Myers (1975) estimate of 15,000 cheetahs in Africa in the 1970s, a decline of at least 30% is suspected over the past 18 years (3 generations). The decline is primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as killing and capture of cheetahs as livestock depredators, primarily, as well as for trade (IUCN Cats Red List Workshop 2007).
