  • While my scanner is on the blink I’ve been going through some of my photos taken while in Shanghai, China in 2006 and found a few with potential. I don’t think I’ll upload too many as photography isn’t one of my strong points, but it is fun to see what you can do with an image in photoshop.

  • Mrs. Lavinski had some rather Libertarian views on the subject of property tax (especially for a card-carrying Wobblie) but that contradiction doesn’t make her attempts to avoid them any less entertaining. A Hungarian immigrant of amazing ingenuity, Zora put her hard work in the factories of Chicago to good use when it came to crafting a solution to avoiding the “damn Revenuers” who drove her batty. Her steam-powered moving tenement more than returned the favor – it was rumored that no fewer than 10 tax assessors found it necessary to take “medical leaves of absence” after being driven mad by their attempts to track down Zora’s property and assess it. (You can read the rest of Zora Lavinski’s story here: http://flickr.com/photos/winonacookie/2684431674/) This original artwork and story are copyright Ramona Szczerba 2008. • WINNER of the challenge Whitby Whitby / North Yorkshire, UK The History of Whitby Whitby has a wonderful history, a ruined abbey, a working harbour, a delightful collection of red-roofed pantile cottages, narrow cobbled streets, and claims to have the country’s best fish and chip shops. The town is also close to the scenic North York Moors National Park and the unspoilt fishing villages of Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay. Whitby is divided in two by the River Esk. St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey are on the eastern headland. The Abbey is accessible by road, and also via 199 steps from the town to the summit. These steps have associations with Bram Stoker, as he based much of his Dracula novel here whilst staying in Whitby in 1890. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better know as Lewis Carroll) also set some of his work and poems in Whitby, as he was a regular visitor. The Abbey’s history dates back to 675 A.D. when St. Hilda founded a monastery. The present structure is from 1078 and is now in the care of English Heritage. • Sacre Coeur, Paris. The amazingly original basilica is located in Montmartre, leading to the highest point of Paris city. First constructed in 1875, it was not completed until 1914, due to a problematic law system that almost stopped construction entirely. Only saved by a loophole, construction finally continued to the end. I didn’t get to spend as much time here as I would normally like to, but the climb to the top of the tower was worth it for the incredible view of the city below. Original shot layered twice, with 3 textures, colour altering of each layer, blending of layers, further colour altering and an omni light effect. • Inside a rustic cottage full of beautiful things at a New Brunswick historical site. I’m unable to download the original large size image due to problems with uploading to RB. I was able to download this card-size version only. It seems there are a few Redbubblers that are experiencing the same problem. © 2009 Anne Hale. Featured in Windows and Doors group, Nov. 29/09.

  • This is a beautiful little community snuggled high up in the mountains near Maricopa, California. During a visit today I took this shot and then processed it in CS3 with textures, filters and effects. This is the little town where I found the man I used in the “Character Portrait” image uploaded earlier. In fact, my wife and I went there for a memorial service for my cousin and that entire community turned out. The gentleman in the character image was a friend of my cousins for many years, whom I had never met before. Wonderful people whom I thank for their hospitality.
