  • Open for Business
    by HollyK

History is a gallery of pictures in which there are few originals and many copies. / ~ Alexis de Tocqueville / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / In this image I was hoping to capture the essence of the small outback community of Silverton that is so typically Australian. Not only were the Mad Max movies made there and numerous other movies and advertisements, it is a town full of history and wonderful eccentric artists. This is Peter Brown’s gallery perched on top of a barren hillside as you drive into town. His emu caricatures are a delight! / -—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / Thank you to everyone in Redbubbles Outback Australia group for voting Open for Business in the top ten of their competition.

Power boat cruising by “Big Red” lighthouse in the Holland Harbor. “Big Red” is the only lighthouse that has a name and is most photographed. It is a historical landmark and its friendly guiding light has brought many ships home safe.

  • BETTER VIEWED LARGER Campbell’s Cove was formerly docks in the early days of the Colony of Sydney, this is where everything that had to be imported and exported passed throuh. These grand old buildings in Sydneys “Rocks ” district thankfully survive along with other buildings once threatened by demolision the area of the Rocks was saved by residents and unions from being demolished. Now the home of restaurants, hotels pubs and history, a walk through the rocks is like walking back in time The shot is the result of five bracketted shots then processed with photomatix, its a little bit heavier in hdr than my normal but i liked the effect. This area is now home to waterfront restaurants

  • Oil on Linen / Detail, Portrait of Frederick L. Gregory / Rick Gregory is one of the few granite sculptors in America – I’m not sure more than five artists work in this very tough, formidable rock. California has a good stock of it, especially around Fresno and Yosemite. I thought Rick looked a bit Apollo-ish; I added a fist full of blueprints. We had some very artsy adventures, one at the height of a blinding record-setting rain and wind a few years back on the Central Coast. We drove to Big Sur dodging collapsing cliffs and boulders on Highway One, to tie down twenty-five and thirty foot blocks of Rick’s granite sculpture against the tempest. The best I can say about that thrilling day was that nobody died. Years ago, this expert sailor was on the winning America’s Cup team before hitting dry land in Brazil where he stayed to study rock building with a Japanese master, marry Miss Brazil, and start a family. He’s gone back and forth ever since between Brazil and California, making extraordinary monolithic granite sculptures, many interplaying with water. His work is shown at the Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur, and installed all over the world in public and private collections.

  • In All Her Glory
    by Darlene Marryatt-Ruhs

    US$3.42–US$91.20

This is probably the most photographed lighthouse in Nova Scotia. For this reason, I don’t usually like taking shots of it because most likely anyone that has visited NS has been there and done that…. However, we went on a Sunday drive and decided to go to Peggy’s Cove where this famous lighthouse lives. She is a beauty though right?
