Oil painting on canvas I painted this scene of an Irish village several years ago, adapted from an old photograph dating from probably the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. The man with the cart is probably a trader, the young woman looks on while the elderly folk take in the sun and watch the activity in the village. Interesting to see the various buildings, from poor thatched cottages to well built stone (shops?) and wealthy mansions. In Ireland today, many of these building would still exist. I live in an old cottage which once had a thatched roof and probably looked pretty much like the one in the painting. The slate roofs can still be seen in some places and the shops and stores still look very much the same… double glazed windows replace the old wooden frames and inside its very modern but walk through any old Irish village or town and you will see that the old buildings are still there. Driving through an old village is a nightmare… the road is narrow and will swerve because, as in this painting, a building could jut out into the road. Slow down world!! Bring back the donkey and cart, I say!!! :-)

Chefchaouen is a city in northwest Morocco. It is the chief town of the province of the same name. Chefchaouen is situated in the Rif Mountains, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan. The city was founded in 1471, as a small fortress which still exists to this day, by Moorish exiles from Spain to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. It was known as one of the main concentrations of Moriscos and Jews who sought refuge in this mountainous city after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times. In 1920, the Spanish seized Chefchaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco. They returned the city after the independence of Morocco in 1956. The name ‘Chefchaouen’ refers to the shapes of the mountain tops that tower over the town, that look like the two horns (chaoua) of a goat. It literally means “look at the horns”. The blue-rinsed houses and buildings, are a tradition that comes from the town’s former Jewish population. Bloke walking up stairs of a block of flats at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, carrying a bag. A photo from a photography class assignment in 1994, and one of my faves ever. Dark and enigmatic, but emblematic of single-minded purpose, metaphor of life’s journey. Dig the repeating cellular and tooth elements. He is walking into the maw of the beast. Dig likewise, the directionality implied by the arrow-heads formed, big, black arrows opposing the man’s forward movement, light arrows formed of concrete faces, buoying him upward, corresponding dark spaces threaten to drag back down. Counterposed forces, on the stairs themselves grinding on each other like shark-teeth set to lacerate a surfer’s legs. Somehow he stays afloat. Does he have any choice? Up, turn. Up, turn. His path is layed out for him. Where does it lead? Ultimately, back down—Newton, 1687. Up is a dead end. I could shit on like this for hours. There should be more like this. Please take more? Hand-processed b&w photo, scanned and digitally restored.

I came across this building on my run about in the snow storm. I thought of doing it in B&W or even Sepia.. But alas I liked the colors that showed.. These small sheds and barns were built to last. Some made of ash tree’s. It looks as if its being kept in repair and still an older look.. With the falling snow and overcast sky it made my choice.. hope you agree..

Which ones better please?? I really like this one with more leaves in it..but it’s a bit disappointing that Centre Point Tower is so close to the edge. Does that really matter???
