This is a Photoshop adjusted version of my previously posted Ciutadella Town Hall II. The adjustments were made by the super talented Julie Langford, for which I am most grateful. She has removed all the clutter and added a fabulous sky. Please let us know what you think! Related shots can be viewed at Menorca or Balearic Islands or Spain. Best viewed Larger. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Sambro Island Lighthouse. Families, including cousins of mine used to live on the island all year round. There were two homes which are still standing, but barely. I believe the building you are seeing in this shot is where the families kept their supplies and storage. The island is said to be haunted by a man. I was quite disappointed to not have felt or seen something eerie while I was there. There is also a spot which looks to be carved out of the rocks on the island called the “Devil’s Footprints” The story goes that the devil walks up out of the water and walks up the rocks to the island. What the devil would want with a lighthouse I have no idea, but that is what I was told. The rock pattern is very odd though and quite something to see. The lighthouse is now run by solar panels and no human hands are needed. Even the fog horn is run by a machine that detects fog. Even though I did not see or feel a ghost, the island has a very lonely feel to it, an abandoned and sad spot. I couldn’t imagine being there alone….no, I just could not!
When a farming idea failed, this place was abandoned and dreams left behind. As I poked around, I could hear small movements and felt watched….only to discover it was home to masses of whopping great crabs, roaming back and forth from forest to floorboards! Chapels everywhere … tiny little family chapels in remote places, slightly bigger ones in the villages, larger and more exquisite churches dotted through towns and the countryside alike … iconic and totally beautiful!
A stunning little porch that enchants when wandering the main street of Zia village up in the mountains of Kos Island, Greece Featured in German Artists in June 2009 … what an honour! Thank you kindly :)
Greece’s typical blue & white – I found these shutters just simply irresistible :) Canon EOS450D with kit lens (18-55mm)
Featured in The Mysterious Balkans in July 2009 … thank you so much!! :) We happened upon this exquisite church a bit by “accident” ... We’d set off by bus from Parikia, got dropped off virtually in the middle of nowhere at a turn-off in the road – we made our way up the hill, very much looking forward to seeing the butterfly valley (well, it’s moths really…) ... ... we walked and started thinking we were lost or had gone too far or something, but when we asked a local who came by on his moped, he assured us that it was just a few 100 meters more and we would see the tall trees offering their shade and providing the home for the moths we’d come to see. / chuckles / We got to the butterfly valley exactly two days too early – it wasn’t open for the season yet. / We decided that surely our long hike up the hill in the heat of the day could not have been for nothing … there were several chapels shown on the map in my cousin’s guidebook … we decided to take another road along the hill and down the other side to take in some of the scenery while we were up there and to then meet up with the main road at a point closer to town than where we’d initially been dropped off. We never got to any of those chapels we saw marked off in the guidebook, though we saw some in the distance … / We did however happen upon this beautiful church and a monastery nearby! ... Utterly exquisite! The little old man taking care of the church let us in and allowed us to look around and take pictures … The painting inside the church – breathtaking! ... The precious Paros Marble used around the windows … utterly spectacular! Canon EOS 450D with kit lens (18-55mm)

Suisinish is an abandoned village reached after a rough hour- long walk from Kilbride, near Torrin, Isle of Skye. / This old cottage is too modern to have been one of the dwellings where the folk were evicted to make way for the sheep, which were more profitable to the greedy landowners of the time. Many of the families were separated, and forced to emigrate to America, Canada, and Australia. / I cannot begin to feel their anguish. / There are many ruins scattered around the Brae (hillside), evidence of a thriving, close-knit community torn apart by human greed. Maybe this bulding was built early in the twentieth century, I have no idea and can find no information. / Back to the present….. / There was quite a wait for some usable light, a chilly fierce wind was blowing, rain was brewing, nothing new ! We sat in the shelter of one of those deserted ruins, eating a cheese piece, ( sandwich ) and a cheering cup of hot coffee from the thermos, reflecting on how ‘they’ lived then, compared to us nowadays, and watching the sheep that are now the only inhabitants of this beautiful place. / Rowan trees were planted in the belief they kept evil spirits away, and it is considered very bad luck to cut one down, even today ! This cottage is surrounded by them, I guess the magic didn’t work. A three shot HDR. CanonEOS 40D mounted on tripod, iso 100, auto wb, f22, RAW files converted in Photomatix, and touched up in Adobe CS3. / A little Orton also applied to ‘pop’ the texture of the stone. / A slight vignette added.
