A small laneway in Venice, Italy, one rainy morning. Thanks to Janys Hyde / for the description of the location of this shot: / the bridge just visible on the right which leads into the square of S.S. Apostoli one of the squares en route along the Lista di Spagna, a main thoroughfare between the railway station and the Rialto Bridge. 2008 This photograph in the The Top Ten of the Black and White Photography group Street challenge Featured on the home page, 24 Sept 2008. I felt like uploading a picture of my hometown… I live in Sydney and do miss it a lot sometimes. I try to go back every 6 months (going there tomorrow actually yay!). Changed the name of it after Jason Moses’ comment :)

Bloke walking up stairs of a block of flats at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, carrying a bag. A photo from a photography class assignment in 1994, and one of my faves ever. Dark and enigmatic, but emblematic of single-minded purpose, metaphor of life’s journey. Dig the repeating cellular and tooth elements. He is walking into the maw of the beast. Dig likewise, the directionality implied by the arrow-heads formed, big, black arrows opposing the man’s forward movement, light arrows formed of concrete faces, buoying him upward, corresponding dark spaces threaten to drag back down. Counterposed forces, on the stairs themselves grinding on each other like shark-teeth set to lacerate a surfer’s legs. Somehow he stays afloat. Does he have any choice? Up, turn. Up, turn. His path is layed out for him. Where does it lead? Ultimately, back down—Newton, 1687. Up is a dead end. I could shit on like this for hours. There should be more like this. Please take more? Hand-processed b&w photo, scanned and digitally restored.

Old dilapidated barn with rustic red doors. This old barn will be torn down sometime this month. Someone in the neighborhood complained that it was an “eye sore”.... so sad! Image was redone for me in HDR by Kimberly Palmer.

I had to to into the city last week to organize some detail regarding an upcoming exhibition and afterwards I wandered back to Circular Quay and took some snaps of the wonderful towers of glass and stone that dominate that part of the city. Later on I processed the film I had shot in every so slightly oxidized film developer which has given me the most strangely odd texture to the final images….. I just love the way there are so many points to intervene with analouge…. sometimes that’s a bad thing and you lose everything but sometimes the risks are worth it and a really unexpected but interesting result takes place….. like in this shot and the next few I upload. I love strong shapes in architecture and the way that you can see patterns all around in the built environment…... the image is of the roof line of the Sydney Sofitel Hotel in Philip Street Sydney. The building is actually more of a horseshoe shape but no matter… I love it for its strong but defiantly non towering presence in this forest of megabuildings down by the harbour. /

A tops’l schooner has been wrecked ashore in shallow water, in the North East coal harbour of Cullercoats, circa1880’s. Most winter’s saw at least one sailing ship wrecked at the mouth of the river Tyne. A Victorian photo from my priceless book, was used for the painting. Watercolour and HB pencil drawing. 12” x 8”.

the next in my dark city building series…. this is the same black granite building in / Sydney’s CBD as in Tilt but in this image I’ve caught it shapeshifting into it’s own reflection on the towering glass ediface opposite it…. the dreadful developing has really become fully obvious in this shot but I think it adds some thing mysterious and unreal to these photographs of the city…..

yesterday I uploaded an odd archictural shot of the Sydney Sofitel Hotel which is in the CBD of central Sydney only a couple of blocks back from the harbour….. today I’m going to upload some more of these strange over exposed and wildly processed analouge images. This one is taken at the end of the road were the Sofitel stands and while standing waiting for the lights to change I just looked straight up from where I was standing right under the street sign and I just had to take a quick shot…..the angles are all competing and the weird processing all combine to make this more about being a strangely compelling cubist abstract some how….... I’ve seen this cluster of buildings like a zillion times over the years so it’s remarkabale how just changing your point of view seems to release a whole new vista …...

This photo is a 5xp HDR (Photomatix), B&W conversion (Lightroom). It’s almost half a panorama and half an architectural study. Oh yeah and there is my bag (Crumpler – Karachi Outpost) and all of this happened on a location reckie. I don’t really know what this is. Maybe you have an idea.
