This town died when the railway that / sustained its existence re-routed. / An eerie ghost town with faded shop fronts / and a host of photographic possibilities - / especially during a stormy sunset – / draping life over this faded facade and (almost) / lifeless town. / Terowie SA 2007 / Made famous as the town where Gen Douglas MacArthur gave his “I shall return” speech on March 20th 1942 at the railway siding – a rest stop on his way by train from Darwing to Adelaide. (Visit the plaque on the deserted platform) Taken on a three day trip from Barossa to Broken Hill to Mildura looking for typical australiana to grace the 2008 CoolDrive calendar. /

This ruin just outside Burra in South Australia was made famous as the cover art of Midnight Oil’s classic 1986 album Diesel and Dust / While there are many ruins in this area – the gateway to the outback – this oneis the most photogenic due to its classic shape and relative completeness. The rolling hills in the background also make for a picturesque scene. Just don’t be tempted to jump the fence as an ominous “No Trespassing” sign leaves you in no doubt this is an inhospitable area not only for the original settlers, but pesky tourists as well, especially those with cameras!
I dont know what this place is called, i am trying to research it, i am going tomorrow to go inside and see, i have afeeling its some kind of health centre, should i say was!!
On my way back from getting my hair cut on a Saturday morning in early February, I drove past this farmhouse and decided it was a unique place. I didn’t like anything I was getting from the main road, so I drove up behind it on a side road. / The smaller outbuildings seemed to carry most of the charm, so I tried to make them more of the focal point. I also did this one in sepia, and I do like the result, but in color it seemed to be adequately aged and rather sad, so I opted for natural. BONUS Hobbit Huts on the property…. LavenderMoon~
An old derelict house with vibrant blue painted door and window frame. Photographed using HDR.
Took this one in Glasgow – separate entrances for boys and girls. I was imagining how young children felt as they entered this scary building and used the angle to capture from a child’s perspective. The clouds added a very ominous look to the scene. Tried this one in B&W – seems to have more impact than the colour version.
Strapped on the side of this abandoned ship works is a tiny little tin plate annex used to cover a set of emergency stairs and pipework from the various sinks and toilets around the building.
The power of fire shown in an image taken at a deliberate burn of an old derelict building at Mt Burr Football Oval in South Australia. Used by the Country Fire Service as a training tool! The blue light is the reflection off of the emergency services vehicles parked nearby!
from a scanned neg taken some years ago.
Abandoned Victorian summerhouse. I desaturated the original somewhat, then played about with contrast, colour filters and blending modes to bring outthe character of the building. I use PhotoImpact. This was taken on a Nikon d50.
from a series I did some years ago “windows”. Scanned neg/photoshop. / Photoshop and I are getting along at the moment, it,s got me out of trouble a few times!!
Battersea Battle / This features one of my favourite London buildings – Battersea Power Station. It also celebrates the thriving urban art movement of the capital city. Process and detail: / / The t-shirt: /
Shot from a loft view within the Old Cellulose Factory near Millicent in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. It was as if the machinery had been swallowed up and buried in situ when they closed this magnificent old factory. Went out today with Biggzie for a scouting session within the factory in prelude to the photographic session to be finalised soon with Tony Ryan from Melbourne. PS: Happy birthday Biggzie!!! Canon 400D 18-55 three shot HDr processed in Photomatix.
Sorry for those who have seen this before. I have been having trouble uploading with images not appearing in people’s monitors. This is the fifth attempt with this shot. Image taken on a scouting trip with Biggzie for an upcoming workshop visit by Tony Ryan from melbourne. Interior third floor of the old Cellulose Paper Mill between Millicent and Snuggery in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. Canon 400D 15-55 lens three shot HDR in Photomatix.
Found this wonderful old unoccupied building at Rendelsham, (between Millicent and Beachport) in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. Bright bold peeling red paint on the front door, offset by small flute corrugated iron walls. Surrounded by old rusted out cars, tins and a range of heritage items this place stands as a wonderful reminder of times past. Canon 400D 18-55 lens.
Suisinish is an abandoned village reached after a rough hour- long walk from Kilbride, near Torrin, Isle of Skye. / This old cottage is too modern to have been one of the dwellings where the folk were evicted to make way for the sheep, which were more profitable to the greedy landowners of the time. Many of the families were separated, and forced to emigrate to America, Canada, and Australia. / I cannot begin to feel their anguish. / There are many ruins scattered around the Brae (hillside), evidence of a thriving, close-knit community torn apart by human greed. Maybe this bulding was built early in the twentieth century, I have no idea and can find no information. / Back to the present….. / There was quite a wait for some usable light, a chilly fierce wind was blowing, rain was brewing, nothing new ! We sat in the shelter of one of those deserted ruins, eating a cheese piece, ( sandwich ) and a cheering cup of hot coffee from the thermos, reflecting on how ‘they’ lived then, compared to us nowadays, and watching the sheep that are now the only inhabitants of this beautiful place. / Rowan trees were planted in the belief they kept evil spirits away, and it is considered very bad luck to cut one down, even today ! This cottage is surrounded by them, I guess the magic didn’t work. A three shot HDR. CanonEOS 40D mounted on tripod, iso 100, auto wb, f22, RAW files converted in Photomatix, and touched up in Adobe CS3. / A little Orton also applied to ‘pop’ the texture of the stone. / A slight vignette added.
