  • Carlisle Castle in the city of Carlisle, England has been the scene of a great deal of history including a particularly unpleasant siege that ended badly for the ultimately starving defenders.

  • Carlisle has a lovely castle which has a fair bit of history behind it. I think it looks best at night when lit dramatically by the flood lights. The contrast and moodiness hint at the castle’s brutal past.

  • This mansion on Melbourne’s outskirts has lovely grounds and is now owned by the state government. The highlights are a grand staircase and a fantastic billiard room and attached sun room. A favourite spot for weddings and it has a 90 room hotel attached. / Every year the Helen Lempriere sculpture awards are shown here in the grounds, which is why i was here. / Update. This looks like being turned into a Disneyland style theme park! I thought it was an April Fool’s Day joke but it is April 5!

  • There has been a Norman castle on this site since 1170. From the 14th to the 17th century the O’ Carroll family ruled from here and the territory was known as Ely O’ Carroll The castle was granted to Sir Lawrence Parsons in 1620 and it is still the private family home of the Parsons family. The Grounds and the Gardens The grounds evolved from the parkland of oak and beech trees of the 17th century; of the same period are the Box Hedges which form part of the formal gardens. The 18th century is characterised by the creation of the lake and planting around this area. The 19th century saw the building of the Suspension Bridge and the development of the Fernery and the Fountain, the Waterfall and the Winter Garden. The 20th century saw the creation of the Arboretum, the River Garden, the terraces and herbaceous borders around the castle, the seed and plant expeditions abroad and the development of glass houses for propagation. Of the same period is the development of the formal gardens based on 17th century Bavarian design. The wildflower meadows are left uncut until July to ensure that the wild flowers seed and naturally regenerate.

  • Ramsay Garden and Edinburgh Castle from the Mound in Edinburgh, Scotland. High above Princes Street, nestled beside Edinburgh Castle, there have probably been dwelling houses for well over 1,000 years. The present buildings, however, only go back to a redevelopment in the 18th century. Since there were no official planning controls in those days, there is a delightful mix of architectural styles, including an octagonal “Goose-pie” house built by Allan Ramsay the poet. There is a beautiful spacious flat, with a panoramic 360 degree view, designed by Sir Patrick Geddes (regarded as the “father” of town planning) which was created to encourage the University professors to return to the “Old Town” of Edinburgh. The apartments, with their magnificent views over Edinburgh to the river Forth and Fife on the other side of the river, are now privately owned, high priced, luxury dwellings. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. On the left of the shot the cream buildings with red roofs are called Ramsay Garden. At bottom center is the National Gallery of Scotland. Finally, in the background is the imposing bulk of Edinburgh Castle. Camera: Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi in the USA) BEST VIEWED LARGER Three bracketed JPGs converted to HDR in Photomatix. • The view from the third floor of The Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion on Chalmers Street, Ediburgh Scotland looking North West on a grey and rainy July day. The red sandstone building with the square tower is the Museum of Fire at Lauriston Place. The Museum of Fire tells the history of the oldest municipal Fire Brigade in the United Kingdom, formed in 1824. Behind this can be seen some of the buildings of Edinburgh Castle. From the left, the New Barracks, the Queen Anne Building, the Great Hall, the Palace and the Half Moon Battery. • Château-Larcher is in the Vienne dept of the Poitou Charente – we have passed by and often thought must go and see this chateau one day – so we did and this is what we found! Although the church was locked by the time we parked and walked back, this is really what remains of the chateau. At the back of the property it’s pretty delipidated! Hugh VIII the Old of Lusignan or Hugh III of La Marche or Hugues VIII le Vieux de Lusignan was the eldest son of Hugh VII and of Sarrasine or Saracena de Lezay. He became Seigneur de Lusignan, Couhé, and Château-Larcher and Count of La Marche on his father’s death in 1151. Born in Poitou, 1106-1110 or some time after 1125, he died in Holy Land in 1165 or 1171. Canon eos 400d sigma lens 70-300mm
