I began this series with the idea I’d create something for my boyfriend’s office. The initial efforts were photos of clouds (see earlier images) but I felt it was a great opportunity to do more painting. The plan was to have something that expresses a feeling of nature, wide open spaces and strong, bold colour. Their space needed something masculine and simple, also. Previously, much of the paintings that had been completed were done for the home, for the interior space, with a gentle, decorative sensibility. An office requires imagery which is a little more robust. I had been getting out and about, looking at different exhibitions and artists, and enjoyed the way artists like Minnie Pwerle used big, expressive strokes, rather than precious, little ones. I enjoyed the sense of freedom. Deciding I also wanted to create an ‘expanse’, it is mindfully created simply as an abstract painting. It is without reference to Sugar Bag country or any specific area at all. It is difficult not to be influenced by the colours we see surrounding us-I love bright colour and having spent a year with a teacher who had Aboriginal heritage who both encouraged us to be more aware of Aboriginal history and simultaneously scared us so much about copyright and the infringements on people’s stories and country, I have been extremely sensitive about the journey and the influence. I have done a fair amount of reading on the subject, spoken to the cultural officer at the AGNSW who aassures me as long as you are telling your own story, it’s OK. It also inspired me to teach Aborignal history to my students, as I was as a child and reflects a connection I have always felt to the sky, the earth and the spirit within.

and yes, people love clouds, but even more, we looove a sunset. especially when it’s original. an original sunset painting turned into an electronic glow. (altered via photoshop) and in breaking news-this painting (the original) sold at the weekend exhibition! Gold!

The sun sets on this old house, in more ways than one. I believe it shall soon be no more, it’s life given for a a new housing estate. No-one lives there now, but soon there’ll be hundreds of little blocks with little houses and not-so-little morgages!

I was back up at the Bunkyou Civic Centre yesterday, this time with one of my students. The sunset was extraordinary. It was impossible to control the lens-flare as I was shooting straight into the sun for this shot. Five-shot bracketed HDR with very little done to the colour. This is pretty much, apart from a bit of a shift in the tonal contrast, what the scene looked like through the lens. Nikon D300 / Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED / 5-frame bracketed burst merged in Photomatix 2.5.4

Sunrise on the Chicago skyline with Lake Michigan aglow. The 3 block rocks were covered with a coating of ice and along with the posts reminded me of Stonehenge. Worked in Layers by placing two widely different exposed images on top of each other and removing parts of one image to leave the deep colors of the sky and keep the highlighted icy block rocks. This done using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Hi all, been away for quite a while now, hope you are all well. I clicked on RB yesterday for the first time in ages and was pleased to see the high standard has still been maintained, this inspired me to try and make time for photography again, i had thousands of photos i had taken but not done anything with, so this morning before i went to work i got up and did this, i thought it was quite topical for the weather we are having here in England at the moment. It is a village scene from our local village Wentworth. Hope you like it. / Dave.

Last shot of the day in downtown Chicago. As I was returning home, waiting in the subway for my train, there was a man with the most soulful voice singing for tips. Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone originally by Bill Withers is how I wish I could title this image because that was the last song I heard him sing as my train pulled away. I also thought it was interesting that behind the woman sits a child’s shoe even though no one else was around.
