Lunch Time or is it? / Captured in the Wilderness…...MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY / The Gulf Fritillary / TECH INFO: Nikon D1x camera, Macro dedicated lens 200 mm To EMAIL ME please do so at myart4u@earthlink.net The Gulf Fritillary is a striking, bright orange butterfly of the family Nymphalidae and sub-family Heliconiinae. It was formerly classified in a separate family, the Heliconiidae or longwing butterflies, and like other longwings it does have long, rather narrow wings in comparison with other butterflies. It is not closely related to the true fritillaries. It is a medium to large butterfly, with a wingspan of from 6 to 9.5 cm. Its underwings are buff, with large silvery spots. It takes its name from the fact that migrating flights of the butterflies are sometimes seen over the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Fritillary is commonly seen in parks and gardens, as well as in open country. Its range extends from Argentina through Central America Mexico, and the West Indies to the southern United States, as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area on the west coast. It is occasionally found further north in the US. ...the masquerade… No lady- or pill-bugs were hurt during the session. / ...................................................................................................... Edit: and now available as a T-shirt! I made it a fem-shirt – the motif seems to be in the right spot so hopefully my pillbugs will get some action!

Often when I’m out with my camera I will just sit for a while and watch… Nature has some amazing things to teach us, if we are only willing to pay attention… As humans we often “over think” things; we try so hard to do something that we end up overanalyzing it and not doing it at all. I watched this ladybug for a bit as she climbed up this plant, probably looking for aphids or some other bug to eat, and when she got to the end of the stick, without hesitation she decided she was ready to fly and she did it (good thing I was right there or I would have totally missed the shot). Sometimes I think that her method is the best way to approach things… Decide you want to do something, and just do it. No overthinking or overanalyzing, no self-doubts or second guessing… Just open your wings and fly. Just my thoughts for the day. :) This shot was taken at a botanical garden in Gainesville, Florida. 100% of the profits from the sale of this print will be donated to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

I’m lucky enough to have a small secret place I visit where these beautiful creatures seem to congregate and or breed. I love visiting and watching them in their thousands as they sneak in and out of small gaps and caverns. An amazing act of nature.

A series I worked on in 2001. A coincidence of moments – a few days after talking to a friend about the old pin the bug science experiments we used to do in school I came across the Squished Fairy Book a children’s’ book about a girl who collects fairies in a scrap book by squishing them between the pages of her book. Loved it and decided to play around with the two ideas together. Interestingly when I first exhibited them I was abused by some of the gallery patrons for the ‘nasty’ ‘horrible’ work which ‘they would never have on their walls’.
