To AD ME to your WATCHLIST click BAMBI Icon. / It took lots of patience to get this photo…This butterfly blends so well with nature it is hard to be spoted…..ofcourse patience is a must when photographing wild nature…rarely seen….unique species / Greta oto is a brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the clearwing clade; its wings are transparent. Its most common English name is glasswing, and its Spanish name is espejitos, which means “little mirrors.” Indeed, the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass. It is one of the more abundant clearwing species in its home range, which extends throughout Central America into Mexico. The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color. Its wingspan is between 5.5 and 6 cm. Adults inhabit the rainforest understory and feed on the nectar of a variety of tropical flowers. G. oto prefers to lay its eggs on plants of the tropical nightshade genus Cestrum. The silvery-gray caterpillars feed on these toxic plants and store the alkaloids in their tissues, making them distasteful to predators such as birds. They retain their toxicity in adulthood. The same alkaloids that make them poisonous also are converted into pheromones by the males, which use them to attract females. Often when I’m out with my camera I will just sit for a while and watch… Nature has some amazing things to teach us, if we are only willing to pay attention… As humans we often “over think” things; we try so hard to do something that we end up overanalyzing it and not doing it at all. I watched this ladybug for a bit as she climbed up this plant, probably looking for aphids or some other bug to eat, and when she got to the end of the stick, without hesitation she decided she was ready to fly and she did it (good thing I was right there or I would have totally missed the shot). Sometimes I think that her method is the best way to approach things… Decide you want to do something, and just do it. No overthinking or overanalyzing, no self-doubts or second guessing… Just open your wings and fly. Just my thoughts for the day. :) This shot was taken at a botanical garden in Gainesville, Florida. 100% of the profits from the sale of this print will be donated to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

I’m lucky enough to have a small secret place I visit where these beautiful creatures seem to congregate and or breed. I love visiting and watching them in their thousands as they sneak in and out of small gaps and caverns. An amazing act of nature.

A series I worked on in 2001. A coincidence of moments – a few days after talking to a friend about the old pin the bug science experiments we used to do in school I came across the Squished Fairy Book a children’s’ book about a girl who collects fairies in a scrap book by squishing them between the pages of her book. Loved it and decided to play around with the two ideas together. Interestingly when I first exhibited them I was abused by some of the gallery patrons for the ‘nasty’ ‘horrible’ work which ‘they would never have on their walls’.
