  • One of the nice things about living in Pennsylvania has been the exposure to the Amish culture. There is, of course, the world-famous Lancaster County Amish, but even here in Dauphin County we have Amish settlements. One evening, I was driving along and happened to look up in time to see this. I had to turn around and go back to capture the moment. Location: Berrysburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania

  • taken outside of West Montrose, ON. I often roam the backroads of Mennonite country looking for scenes just like this. Barn cats are quite plentiful. The average farm may have 15-20 in plain view, and likely more hiding.

  • not just another sunset image! taken just north of Hawkesville, ON. Sunday evenings at sunset is rush hour in Mennonite country. This was in late August on one of those nights where the wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the colors were classic.

  • New Orleans as I remember it before hurricane Katrina. The mules there were hard at work.

  • Yes, believe it or not, this buggy had a hitch for hauling their boat and trailer! Photo taken at Perrin Lake in southern Michigan.

  • This is the American Millipede…..with his drop of ‘keep away’ toxic goo. I’m honestly not positive what THIS would have done but I’ve read with other millipedes that the goo contains poisonous liquid secretions or hydrogen cyanide gas. Capuchen monkeys have been observed pestering millipedes where they live to collect the goo that they then rub on their fur to keep mosquitos away. / Our local fellows aren’t quiet so bad as the tropical varieties but they can still cause burning, blistering, or swelling depending on where the goo gets on the person. / These fellows are usually found in the woods, forests, or even greenhouses here. They’re purely vegitarian, eating plants and dried vegitable matter. They’re night-stalkers…rarely seen in the day time. I’ve just been lucky to come across them by lifting pieces of wood or a rock and finding them curled underneath. /

  • As I looked at this poor old mennonite carriage I had to wonder about its history, journeys and the people who travelled in it.

  • He has great golden frog’s eyes this fellow, also notable about him is his unusual pointed face, long toes and his fantastic mottled colouring, beautiful little frog getting around at night in my yard, Ravenshoe, Far Nth Queensland, Australia, taken with Canon PowerShot A480. /

  • Depicting the lifestyle of the Amish People

  • The content of this image may not exactly match this poem, but for me, anyway, it reminds me of one of my favorite poems. This little carriage full of merrymakers in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, are making the most of this one golden moment. A.E. Houseman – Loveliest of Trees Loveliest of trees, the cherry now / Is hung with bloom along the bough, / And stands about the woodland ride / Wearing white for Eastertide. Now, of my threescore years and ten, / Twenty will not come again, / And take from seventy springs a score, / It only leaves me fifty more. And since to look at things in bloom / Fifty springs are little room, / About the woodlands I will go / To see the cherry hung with snow.
