If you don’t already know, I have this weird (at least I’m told) Obsession with arachnids. I think they are one of the most beautiful and amazing creatures. I have been trying and trying to get a good shot of one, but since I don’t have a macro lense yet, it’s been difficult. I used my 4x zoom filters, which usually turn out blurry, but this one turned out great, in my opinion. And the fact that I caught this lovely lady on a white background, with the shadow she cast! What luck! Let me tell you, she did NOT want to pose for me. I had to keep nudging her to get out of the ball she formed. After this shot she just froze for well over an hour. Poor thing, I scared to death! I believe this gal is a “Barn Spider” ie. Araneus cavaticus / I think this makes such a cool looking card! LOL “

I was trying the macro setting on my 70-300mm lens in a field of flowers surrounded by these buzzing Bumbles. I am definetly going to invest in a dedicated macro lens… any suggestions as to what to get? I use a Canon 400D.

This is one of my favorite photos. It was taken in the garden of a plantation outside of Charleston. I was taking photos of the lovely flowers when this huge bee started buzzing around. I followed him from flower to flower and got several wondeful shots, but this is my favorite. If you look closely there is also an ant on the flower. Apparently it was a very popular bud that morning. /

The foul and disgusting Elm Spanworms (Ennomos subsignaria) have finally metamorphosed from their particularly nasty larva stage in which they eat every single maple tree in St. John’s, Newfoundland, down to the bare branches. After spending just a couple short weeks wrapped up in a curled leaf filled with silk webbing, the fully-formed adults emerge from the chrysalis as a brilliant white moth. They seek out mates, lay eggs in the trees, and the cycle begins again next summer.

I spent countless hours the past 2 summers trying to obtain that certain bee in flight shot. I have several images but none of them were quite what I had hoped for and envisioned. The 70-200 faster lens was used, the macro with and without flash – every shutter speed setting, DOF, you name it…I tried it! I also assumed I could not obtain a focused in flight shot using my macro, with flash, and a 1/200 ss. I believe I was wrong :o) Even with the proper settings, and prime conditions, obtaining the proper timing with these busy little bees is an art in itself! / Bugs are Beautiful / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST /

this is the same guy a few hours later…i could get a better photo when it turned slightly darker because i could make better use of my flash! this is a hdr!
