The Robber Fly is one of my favorite macro subjects. They have so much character. Very interesting to study as well. They actually catch their prey in mid air. This particular robber was only about 3/4 inch long. His meal was exceptionally small. I didn’t know he had until I looked through the lens.

If you don’t already know, I have this weird (at least I’m told) Obsession with arachnids. I think they are one of the most beautiful and amazing creatures. I have been trying and trying to get a good shot of one, but since I don’t have a macro lense yet, it’s been difficult. I used my 4x zoom filters, which usually turn out blurry, but this one turned out great, in my opinion. And the fact that I caught this lovely lady on a white background, with the shadow she cast! What luck! Let me tell you, she did NOT want to pose for me. I had to keep nudging her to get out of the ball she formed. After this shot she just froze for well over an hour. Poor thing, I scared to death! I believe this gal is a “Barn Spider” ie. Araneus cavaticus / I think this makes such a cool looking card! LOL

Now I’ve lived in Florida for oh 5 nearly 6 years now and have never come across such a gorgeous moth. This moth is 4.5 in width, quite large species. Here is my original photo taken this morning of this stunning moth. He/she is still sitting on the fence and quiet content. I had 4 dogs over playing and running back in forth, and children running around yelling. All the while it wasnt frighten off! We were able to touch it gently, open its wings, pet its head and belly and it seemed happy enough to indulge our curiosity. But something tells me this creature came for a reason, so of course i did my research and learned about the spirit animal Butterfly/Moth! It appears to be precisely on point too. So I returned and thanked the creature and offered my habititat on any occassion and welcomed its presence. Personally I hope it visits daily as it really brighten my day and reminded me life is fleeting and beauty even so small is worth stopping and taking notice. It is a treat to see one, because they are very beautiful insects. Humans have caused Luna Moths to become endangered by pollution and loss of habitat. Featured in Ladybugs May 23, 2009 and in Urban Wildlife July 11, 2009 Featured on RB’s Homepage August 15, 2009 / All summer I searched for ladybugs in our gardens. I did find a few but not near AS MANY as in my own home over the winter months. I lost count of how many I gathered up from nooks and crannies and placed in a little aquarium in one contained apartment. I do NOT like to kill bugs and putting them outside in the snow was not an option. My next dilemma…what to feed them? Apparently they like Cheerios! For those just itching to know, they also like raisins and sliced green grapes :) Little droplets of water each day and they made out just fine. Now that Spring has arrived the surviving ladies have all been put back outside :) Canon Rebel EOS XTi with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Manual Mode, SS 1/80, f/5.6, ISO 200. Up until this Spring I had only seen a clearwing hummingbird moth once. Much to my delight this season, however, I am spotting 2 variations on a regular basis on my property. The other one has yellow bumble bee stripes on its back and was scooting around these flowers at the same time this one was. Being a perfectionist It is still my goal to get an awesome side profile shot. I have a few profile shots but am not sure I have the ‘one’ yet :) It has proven quite a challenge to photograph these little guys as their wings beat just as fast as a hummingbird and they do NOT land and stay still. Featured in As Is Photography September 20, 2009. This is an AS IS photograph of a female monarch butterfly along side the chrysalis she just emerged from. Photo taken with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi and 100mm f/2.8 macro lens on my property in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. The Monarch is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae), in the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Female Monarchs (as shown here) have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot called the “androconium” in the center of each hind wing from which pheromones are released. Males are also slightly larger. The larvae and the butterflies retain poisonous glycosides from their larval host plant, the milkweed, so they become distasteful to potential predators. The monarch butterfly eats only milkweed as larvae. This highly effective defense strategy shields them against almost all predators that soon learn to avoid these species after attempting to eat them.
