Last stage of an American Dagger Moth caterpillar before it’ll make a crysallis that’ll be held in place by a lot of webbing inside a leaf. / This fellow was as long as my index finger…probably the largest I’d ever come across! / Found in the wooded area of Jackson Park inside Atchison, Kansas. 8/12/08

View Larger to see closer detail on butterflies face and eyes. / This pretty little thing was outside my window and at first I thought he was dead, but then I realized he was just dying. He couldn’t fly anymore and could barely walk around but I got this shot of him looking up. /

As per the title, this is a ‘Cairns Birdwing’ butterfly (male I believe). I loved the colour and also the fact that he’s actually quite large (think length of your hand from fingertip to wrist). Enjoy!

Large View Recommended. The foul and disgusting Elm Spanworms (Ennomos subsignaria) have finally metamorphosed from their particularly nasty larva stage in which they eat every single maple tree in St. John’s, Newfoundland, down to the bare branches. After spending just a couple short weeks wrapped up in a curled leaf filled with silk webbing, the fully-formed adults emerge from the chrysalis as a brilliant white moth. They seek out mates, lay eggs in the trees, and the cycle begins again next summer.

My son called me the other afternoon to tell me I needed to come to his bus stop to see a ‘big green caterpillar’. I hung up the phone thinking…’ho, hum. just another bug’..........I could see this thing half a block away! It was the size of a typical cigar…....and still has plenty of time to go before it’ll cocoon up. This is the HUGE beautiful Polyphemus moth larva…one of North America’s largest silk moth species. / Of course I let him go back up his tree to finish his stages (the branch he was on had fallen to the ground)...after taking his photos of course.

George the Luna Moth again. I am just obsessed with this little guy’s antennae.

Scarlet-bodied Wasp Moth whose scientific name is Cosmosoma myrodora caught me by surprise when I was walking alongside a pond next door to my home. I’d never seen such a beautiful wasp before. Its wings are transparent and its body has shades of red, white and blue. This photo is a digitalized version; I thought it looked very unique with this treatment. It reminds me of the pen and ink drawings that I love.
