What can I say? This creature mesmerised me…and almost got me questioned by the staff at the Hardware/Nursey place. / I have no idea what type of dragonfly she is.(she? Yes…well usually the females in insects are bigger than the males! This one was HUGE at approxiamtely 4 inches from eyes to tip of tail….) I am entering this in the “Upclose and Spineless Photographic competition ” run by the Australian Museum. I have discovered it is called a “T-Mark” Emerald Dragonfly. You can see the T mark clearly on his nose.

I rarely see a red spider…here is one having a drink!

The Robber Fly is one of my favorite macro subjects. They have so much character. Very interesting to study as well. They actually catch their prey in mid air. This particular robber was only about 3/4 inch long. His meal was exceptionally small. I didn’t know he had until I looked through the lens.

A lot of ‘ladies’ came out of hiding this weekend with the beautiful, warm temperatures we had. I searched high & low almost all summer looking for ladybirds and found just a few. This weekend made up for it, however, as they were EVERYWHERE! / / Bugs are Beautiful / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

I was trying the macro setting on my 70-300mm lens in a field of flowers surrounded by these buzzing Bumbles. I am definetly going to invest in a dedicated macro lens… any suggestions as to what to get? I use a Canon 400D.

The “all you can eat” Labor Day Weekend Buffet continues! After polishing off the Daddy Long Legs spider, the same mantis went back for seconds. Here, the mantis has just caught a Flower Fly and is polishing off some wings. Hey-Save some for dessert!!!

View Larger to see closer detail on butterflies face and eyes. / This pretty little thing was outside my window and at first I thought he was dead, but then I realized he was just dying. He couldn’t fly anymore and could barely walk around but I got this shot of him looking up. /

As per the title, this is a ‘Cairns Birdwing’ butterfly (male I believe). I loved the colour and also the fact that he’s actually quite large (think length of your hand from fingertip to wrist). Enjoy!

I spent countless hours the past 2 summers trying to obtain that certain bee in flight shot. I have several images but none of them were quite what I had hoped for and envisioned. The 70-200 faster lens was used, the macro with and without flash – every shutter speed setting, DOF, you name it…I tried it! I also assumed I could not obtain a focused in flight shot using my macro, with flash, and a 1/200 ss. I believe I was wrong :o) Even with the proper settings, and prime conditions, obtaining the proper timing with these busy little bees is an art in itself! / Bugs are Beautiful / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST /

I called this one ladybird welcome as I believe this was a brand new one. I found her on the edge of our rain barrel repeatedly stretching, and opening & closing her wings. She went on like this for quite some time before she finally flew away. / / Bugs are Beautiful / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST
