The long-eared owl has head feathers (known as ear tufts even though they are not ears) which it raises when alarmed. It is buff-brown with darker brown streaks, and deep orange eyes. It breeds thinly across the UK with fewer birds in the south-west and Wales. Northern birds migrate southwards, including birds from Europe coming to spend the winter in the UK.

Woodblock Print / April 2008 / Printed on Japanese Awa paper / Size of original print: 20cms x 30 cms This is a reduction print, which was taken further than this stage, but I wasn’t as happy with the next stage as I am with this one. Only one print remains of this stage. I am planning to attempt something completely different with what is left of the plate after it was carved out further.

Synchronized Swimming! This is two of our pet Buff Ducks. We have a total of 11 ducks. Ducks make wonderful Pets! These come up to the house every evening for petting and feeding and to bed down at night in their pen. By 7am they are quacking loudly to let me know it’s time to go play at our pond. :o)

The Griffon Vulture It is a typical Old World vulture in appearance, with a white bald head, very broad wings and a short tail. It has a white neck ruff and yellow bill. The buff body and wing coverts contrast with the dark flight feathers. Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals which it finds by soaring over open areas, often moving in flocks. It grunts and hisses at roosts or when feeding on carrion. It breeds on crags in mountains in southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia, laying one egg. Griffon Vultures may form loose colonies. The population is mostly resident.

Two of my 11 ducks. The one in front is a female White Pekin and the one in the back is a male (drake) Buff. They were both born this past spring & we got them when they were 3 days old. They are all so beautiful and fun to watch. :o)

For hilarity, not much can beat a bison calf getting a wild hair. We watched them leap and chase and got lucky to catch this one in mid leap. Wonderful contrast to the stolid adults around them. Canon 1D Mark II, Canon 70-200 f2.8L @200mm, 1/200, f/3.5, ISO 100, Handheld, Processed in Lightroom.

Another day time shooting with the NDX400 aka The Black Glass filter. / One of the last photos taken on my recent trip in Western astralia, Kalbarri National Park region. The road is winding through the beautiful gorges of this incredible red rock being caressed by a gentle but mighty giant of the Indian Ocean. The colours are just undelivably saturated and bright.
