  • Mushin describes the ability to move and react with “no mind”. It is often used in the context of Japanese martial arts practice, and can only be attained through diligent study of the art over many years. Ironically when this photo was taken, the subject was concentrating quite hard on what he was doing. Not mushin at all! Taken with a canon Rebel XT.

  • I saw a girl in my martial arts class bow to her training partner and her bangs drifted forwards to cover her eyes. I knew that I had to take a picture of this. “Rei” is often understood to mean “politeness” or “etiquette” in Japanese, and westerners tend to extrapolate that to mean a highly formalized code of conduct that must be adhered to. Really, it refers to common courtesy. In Western society, upon meeting a new person, we shake their hands and introduce ourselves. That is rei. It is the respect implied in all types of courtesy or ceremony. With Rei properly exercised (and not just going through the motions, but feeling it in our hearts) virtually all unnecessary conflicts can be avoided, whether they be at home, school, or at work. Taken with a Canon 5D, 24-105mm.

  • A photograph of my own book of Budo and given a vintage look to represent the age of Budo which dates back hundreds of years. The book of Budo represents the Martial way of life. Portraying life as a path that should be walked.. Not rushed. Helping me to realise that life is not about how fast we can reach the top of the mountain. But how well i can absorb the beauty of the path that takes me there.

  • The Poet.. Diligently writing and contemplating on his internal thoughts until they reach his heart and soul. Eventually, his thoughts begin to reach the paper for everyone to see..

  • Hassou no kamae. A combative posture in kenjutsu (Japanese swordsmanship) with the sword raised up by the mouth. The student is holding a ‘fukuro shinai’ which is split bamboo wrapped in leather. This can be used to contact your partner without causing injury. Taken with a Canon 5D, 70-200mm f/4 IS.

  • Perhaps one of the most philosophical of all Japanese Budo, the martial art of Iaido may at first seem like a paradox. The art is based on a non-combative physical & mental discipline with the use of a razor sharp Katana, the goal being complete control of mind & body. There is a strong connection between the sword & the practitioner. Sensai can be seen here seated in ‘seiza’ and performing a sword cleaning ritual. The katana is thought of as more of an extension of the mind rather than an extension of the hand. / See also Transcending Duality

  • Contemporary Japanese abstract painting in black and white. The calligraphy is Budō (sometimes written as Budou), which means Martial Arts in Japanese. The original painting was made with artist-grade acrylics on canvas by the Canadian contemporary artist, Soniei. • An image of my Bubishi… My bible of Budo of which i have been studying for over 23 years now… This is without a doubt the most important piece of literature that i own… I have been writting in this book for 23 years and it contains my entire life as a Budoka.. This includes my lifes oath in Japanese Calligraphy…

  • A SP of myself doing what i do best…..

  • When i fight i fight myself.. Although i rarely win i continue to push forward… There is a great saying that says “Even if i face one million foe, i still go” and i have been pushing myself ever sinse… This image represents the many battles i have had internally as well as the strength it portrays by never giving in to the internal conflict regardless of how many times they cut.. The light on the blade represents the fact that light can be found within every dark place if one chooses to look hard enough….... This was created using one original photograph and applying four seperate layers in CS4.
