  • The sun in Asakusa, Japan. The famous for the Sensō-ji, a Buddhist temple dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. It is Tokyo’s oldest temple. According to legend, a statue of the Kannon was found in the Sumida River in 628 by two fishermen, the brothers Hinokuma Hamanari and Hinokuma Takenari. The chief of their village, Hajino Nakamoto, recognized the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by remodeling his own house into a small temple in Asakusa, so that the villagers could worship the Kannon. The blessings of the Kannon gradually received a high reputation throughout Japan, and people near and far flocked to Asakusa to venerate the statue. During World War II, the temple was bombed and for the most part destroyed. It was rebuilt later and is a symbol of rebirth and peace to the Japanese people. In the courtyard there is a tree that was hit by a bomb in the air raids, it had regrown in the husk of the old tree and is a similar symbol to the temple itself. Just an intentionally underexposed shot done in black and white. /

  • This mystical serpent guards Karon Beach in Phuket from future tsunamis. To achieve this fully sunlit golden appearance, I walked in very hot and humid conditions, captured the desired shots, and returned to cool off in a plunge pool. It was worth the effort! The decorations were added by local Buddists, celebrating the birthday of Buddha a few nights previously. Keith.

  • This new Buddist pagoda, in the grounds of the Karon Beach Buddist Temple in Phuket, Thailand is typical of the frantic amount of re-building going on here following the recent devastating tsunami. I was impressed by the dedication of the workers on this site, blessed daily by the orange-robed monks, as they carried out this honored task, with loving dedication. I look forward to revisiting once the building is completed. In the foreground are coils of a sacred serpent, surrounding the colourful central temple. Keith.

  • Guarding the entrance to Karon Beach’s Buddist Temple (Phuket, Thailand), this dragon serpent looks skywards roaring its fierce warning to all unkind spirits. / Something about Asian Temples lends a feeling of serenity. How could this be, I wonder, through something a fearful as a dragon, but perhaps it is its symbolism… even dragons must feel love for some of their own kind (in imagination at least), and mythically, they are fellow living beings… / For me there is no clear answer. Some churches feel cold and forbidding, others warm and friendly. Why? / In Turkey we entered the final home of the Virgin Mary outside Ephesus, and in there, we felt the same quiet spirituality that we felt in this Dragon Temple in Thailand. Similarly, in the baroque St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Why???

  • Why do you not follow thy way? / Across the hills on a sunny day. You have the price of that within, / You fail to follow, shame cos you’d win. Instead, you’ve hidden all your fears, / Inside your heart for years and years. It’s important, that you should know, / To forgive and forget and that dough. My message to you is don’t get caught. / Enjoy your time, life’s too short.
