The sun in Asakusa, Japan. The famous for the Sensō-ji, a Buddhist temple dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. It is Tokyo’s oldest temple. According to legend, a statue of the Kannon was found in the Sumida River in 628 by two fishermen, the brothers Hinokuma Hamanari and Hinokuma Takenari. The chief of their village, Hajino Nakamoto, recognized the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by remodeling his own house into a small temple in Asakusa, so that the villagers could worship the Kannon. The blessings of the Kannon gradually received a high reputation throughout Japan, and people near and far flocked to Asakusa to venerate the statue. During World War II, the temple was bombed and for the most part destroyed. It was rebuilt later and is a symbol of rebirth and peace to the Japanese people. In the courtyard there is a tree that was hit by a bomb in the air raids, it had regrown in the husk of the old tree and is a similar symbol to the temple itself. Just an intentionally underexposed shot done in black and white. /

  • Right where the tsunami wrecked her fearful vengance on unprotected Phuket, the Thai people have built this protective Buddist Serpent, out onto the surfing beach at Karon. I waited until the monsoonal season paused, releasing sufficient sunshine for this golden photograph, and took it especially for this T-Shirt design. I trust you enjoy it and maybe even buy one for yourself. Keith.

  • This mystical serpent guards Karon Beach in Phuket from future tsunamis. To achieve this fully sunlit golden appearance, I walked in very hot and humid conditions, captured the desired shots, and returned to cool off in a plunge pool. It was worth the effort! The decorations were added by local Buddists, celebrating the birthday of Buddha a few nights previously. Keith.

  • Emerging Pagoda
    by Keith Richardson

    US$3.42–US$91.20

This new Buddist pagoda, in the grounds of the Karon Beach Buddist Temple in Phuket, Thailand is typical of the frantic amount of re-building going on here following the recent devastating tsunami. I was impressed by the dedication of the workers on this site, blessed daily by the orange-robed monks, as they carried out this honored task, with loving dedication. I look forward to revisiting once the building is completed. In the foreground are coils of a sacred serpent, surrounding the colourful central temple. Keith.

  • Eye of the Dragon
    by Keith Richardson

Guarding the entrance to Karon Beach’s Buddist Temple (Phuket, Thailand), this dragon serpent looks skywards roaring its fierce warning to all unkind spirits. Keith

  • This Mask: / Very styalized, reminiscent of Buddist traditions, this mask would be a challenge to wear during ceremony with its weight and being easily broken. It depicts a demon but perhaps a kind one. / CHINESE MASKS SERIES NOTES / The masks in this series were lent from China Museum of the Cultural Palace of Nationalities, Beijing to the Immigration Museum in Melbourne, Australia from 8 October 2007 to 24 March 2008, where I photographed them. / The ancient yet still living tradition of mask-making brings together beliefs, myths and symbols from Shamanism and Buddhism, and reflects China’s many ethnic minority cultures. Constructed and painted by hand, some more than 200 years old, these masks symbolise China’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. / Frequently used facial make ups include yellow which represents cruelty, Silver and Gold which are typically used to represent gods and demons and for spirits and ghosts, blue which is vigour and valour and green which depicts justice and chivalry. Red is also a popular colour, thought to bring prosperity. These colour themes have remained the same and were handed down and refined throughout the ages of Chinese art, culture and history. / Chinese Masks are made up of numerous materials like stones and metals, leather and cloth, paper and grass and more. They are then painted in different colour themes and designs. Some masks may represent animal or human characteristics like the lion or the dragon. / Reference: http://museumvictoria.com.au/Masks-China and others. / CARD: / FRAMED:
