Still life photograph of little flower and stacked stones set on an incense tray. Mixed media print on gouache stained and acrylic and Inkaid primed Japanese Kinwashi paper. Red ink stamped Chinese characters mean: Study, Dream, and Love. 11” x 17”. The original file was shot with a Lensbaby. The image was printed on Urara paper then scanned. That file was printed onto the altered Kinwashi substrate.

This is one of the main temples in Vang Vien, Laos. The temple buildings are beautifully ornate and the surrounding garden is peaceful. On this day however, a number of the monks were busy conducting repairs on the building and, the younger ones especially, were scouting in and out of the windows and up and down the ladder as part of their work. They held a group of us captivated, cameras in hand, with their cheeky expression and playful teasing. I loved the strong contrast of the orange robe against the pink building – I think the colours capture the playfulness of the atmosphere even more than the monk’s expression in this case.

The Siamese had a few tales on how the head ended up here. One, the Burmese-Siamese civil war damaged the ancient statues. Two, the French had cut off all Buddha heads when they conquered in the late 1600s. Three, burglars had tried to steal the head but it was too heavy so they gave up and left it. And last (but not least), burglars had tried to steal the head to sell at lucrative prices but were chased by guards. To hide the head they left it in the woods. Whichever tale you believe, years upon years tree roots had overgrown the head – as if protecting it from bad intentions. / This picture was taken in the second ancient city, Ayutthya, Thailand.

In the recent years, Buddhism has made a large impact to many. From the belief to the practising of yoga to the images and decor of Buddha himself, in one way or another we tend to include him in our lives. His feet – in practice – is kissed for his blessings and to show respect. Taken in Sukothai, Thailand on 19 September 2004 – where I found serenity and content.

The Gyoto Monks of Tibet are an often seen sight at many cultural events in the Byron Bay region. Seen here laughing, this particular monk escaped Tibet into India 50 years ago with His Holiness, The Dali Lama. His trademark expression and enjoying tea and biscuit, the joke is enjoyed by all at the table.
