  • In the recent years, Buddhism has made a large impact to many. From the belief to the practising of yoga to the images and decor of Buddha himself, in one way or another we tend to include him in our lives. His feet – in practice – is kissed for his blessings and to show respect. Taken in Sukothai, Thailand on 19 September 2004 – where I found serenity and content.

  • Taken at the Chinese Gardens of Friendship (Sydney). This is a section of a statue of a Buddha in the garden.

  • Tian Tan Buddha at Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island off the Hong Kong Airport, is an imposing sight. This 85 feet bronze statue is the world’s tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha. In its presence, one is dwarfed not just in stature, but in true understanding and perception of life and universe. • Within a temple in Chiang Mai, I have found this little place where the monks burnt encence and placed little golden buddhas, aligned. ~I was fascinated by how they got even the wax to match their robes. even a small arrangement is very carefully thought out….

  • The Siamese had a few tales on how the head ended up here. One, the Burmese-Siamese civil war damaged the ancient statues. Two, the French had cut off all Buddha heads when they conquered in the late 1600s. Three, burglars had tried to steal the head but it was too heavy so they gave up and left it. And last (but not least), burglars had tried to steal the head to sell at lucrative prices but were chased by guards. To hide the head they left it in the woods. Whichever tale you believe, years upon years tree roots had overgrown the head – as if protecting it from bad intentions. / This picture was taken in the second ancient city, Ayutthya, Thailand.

  • In the last couple of years, I have become quite curious about Buddhism. Last year, I picked up a couple of small books at the Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Niagara Falls (and yes there are really 10,000 buddha statues in this temple!) and had quickly thumbed through them. After my trip to Thailand, my interest has grown and a few weeks back started reading the Complete Idiots Guide to Understanding Buddhism (sounds odd but it’s actually a great starting point!). The ideologies truly resonate with me and I have tried to start applying them to my daily life. That being said, I wanted a Buddha statue as a reminder of those ideologies and so this little man is now a beautiful part of my home.

  • Image captured at dawn in the Sukhothai Historical Park. The Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. It has a number of fine monuments, illustrating the beginnings of Thai architecture. The great civilization which evolved in the Kingdom of Sukhothai absorbed numerous influences and ancient local traditions; the rapid assimilation of all these elements forged what is known as the ‘Sukhothai style’.
