The horses of the Akhal-teke breed are famous for the golden shimmer of their coat. They are thoroughbreds (like English thoroughbreds and Arabians) and originate from Turkmenistan. The breed is thought to be over 2000 years old and is one of the very earlier horse breeds known.

this is the same image as “evening gold”, uploaded yesterday, but with a different background. It’s normally a massive job to remove backgrounds from horse portraits because of blending in the mane and whiskers. So, well, it’s an experiment. Feedback welcome!

Well, my leopard mare finally decided it was time to foal mid-morning 3rd Nov 2008, waiting especially for a night I didn’t camp out for her – typical !!!! However, this wee beauty made all the cold, uncomfortable, sleepless nights on a camp bed worthwhile – welcome to “Skyhorse Colidascope” (paddock name yet to be decided upon). She is a grulla buckskin (not a particularly common colour) complete with primitive dorsal stripe & shoulder barring – will be able to see if there is leg barring as well when she gets a little older & loses some foal fuzz …

Horses are very protective of one another, especially when their is impending danger or bad weather. (General rule is Fight or Flight, 99% of the time its flight for horses) These spanish arabs here give the feel of siblings, both young, inexperienced, learning the way of life in the wild. Found myself at a Team Roping Event this last weekend… / Cowboys and Cowgirls from all over Nevada, Utah and Arizona show up to try and claim the top prize. / There must have been 500 horses at this event and being an artist first, I always go for the detail. In 2007, wildfires surrounded us. The air was thick and grey with smoke. It was so hot and so dry, we longed for a cool breeze, and clear air. This scene wasn’t outside my door, but it was inside my mind, so I painted it and pretended I was there watching them! This watercolor is painted on matboard, covered with many layers of gesso, and painted with Windsor and Newton watercolors. I like painting on this surface much better than using watercolor paper. Original size, 8.5X10.
