Yes, the little feature that I spent half a day writing (and the dev team spent the rest of the week finishing) is here. You can now send a short message to another artist on RedBubble by following the link on the profile or works view page. Thanks to Grant’s powers of Photoshop you even get a nifty unread mail notification on the top of the page when someone has sent you a BubbleMail. If you don’t want people to nag you then you’ll find a link to disable your BubbleMail under the edit profile page. In terms of features BubbleMail is a bit sparse, but rather than let you wait another week we figured we’d release it now and let you have a play. A big thanks to John, Grant and Xavier for getting BubbleMail across the line. Cheers Dave

Over the last few days we have had a number of instances where bubblers have decided to use Bubblemail for a bit of up-close-and-dirty personal attacks (all of course from the cowardly distance of relatively anonymous email). This is not on. We will suspend or delete the accounts of those who can’t behave in a civilized fashion in the Bubbleworld. Basic rule is be no less polite to those on RedBubble than you would be if you met them in person at a nice party. And if you are the sort of person who gets drunk and abuses people at parties – then behave as you know you should not as you know you do. And if you can’t or won’t behave politely expect to be bounced out of the party for good. Please report any abuse and we will act.

Some of us can handle it, some can’t. Me? I’m in the can category… in fact I welcome it. I feel that it is only from constructive criticism that we learn. I realise that art is subjective but by the same token there are certain technical aspects that can make a good photo great, a great photo exceptional. I also realise that fellow bubblers may be hesitant to post their critique in the comments section knowing that “potential buyers” can also read these comments. So here is what I am proposing. The staff at RB have provided us with the useful bubblemail tool. While I will always endeavour to post images that are of the highest standard I can achieve at present, if you see something that you feel can be improved or have any hints and tips that you think I might benefit from throw me a bubblemail and let me know. Thanks all!!

Good morning to all beautiful bubblers!! / Yesterday I had an interesting Bubblemail from one of our bubble favorites Danny / who kindly made me aware of an issue perhaps best described by the term popularity. / Now before you go thinking the worst, the mail was very jovial and replied to in kind but it sparked a little thought process which is always a good thing!! / So, I would like to give back a little to the Red Bubble community by adding a link to a different member on each of my works. / Please see the picture below to see what this will look like. / Now, if you have any objections to this or don’t like the image I’ve put your link on please do not hesitate to mail me and let me know. / ...and please do not be disheartened if your link is not on an image, I’ll get around to it eventually. I’m only guessing but it appears that there is over 10,000 members here at Red Bubble so I’ve only got to upload 9,700 more works to fit you all in!! LOL! / Peace, happiness and love to all! /

There is a lot of info around about how to do this, but tracking it down can be hard. So, as I’ve been asked quite a few times in the last few days about how to do this, I thought I would try and gather mine, and others’ info together. / / The idea of featuring other Bubblers was kicked off as an idea by Paul Louis Villani respect to Paul. the way to do it is as follows: There are some little bits of ‘code’ that you need to use and put into the description box. I’ll use THE PALM HOUSE PAGE as an example. Part 1a – the bit of text – Do check out Kara Rasmanis’ great portfolio / NOTE: this text can be whatever you want it to be. Part 2a – the web address of the page you want to link to using this text – http://www.redbubble.com/people/kvalle / NOTE: this is the public view web address of the person Part 3a – web address of the person’s I.D. picture – http://images-0.redbubble.com/rbimages/overview_bio_pic/KV.jpg / NOTE: to get this, go to the public page of the person, right-click their I.D. photo, left-click properties, and then you can left-click-hold and highlight the actual web address of their I.D. photo and COPY it and the PASTE it. Part 4a – and finally, if you want to make the picture a clickable link as well, which is nice, you repeat the web address of the page you want to link to – http://www.redbubble.com/people/kvalle joining it all together You don’t use conventional HTML tags to make it all work. Instead you use DOUBLE SPEECH MARKS, COLONS and EXCLAMATION MARKS and – importantly – NO SPACES anywhere. important: I have to use spaces to let you see what is going on Part 1b – DOUBLE SPEECH MARKS Do check out Kara Rasmanis’ great portfolio DOUBLE SPEECH MARKS COLON Part 2b – right after the COLON – http://www.redbubble.com/people/kvalle / NOTE: this turns the text into a clickable link (if you only want a text link, you need do no more) / NOTE: for the adventurous, you can press ENTER-SPACE-ENTER at this point and it will make a blank line between the test link and the picture, which looks nicer. If you are not adventurous, don’t worry. Part 3b – EXCLAMATION MARK http://images-0.redbubble.com/rbimages/overview_bio_pic/KV.jpg EXCLAMATION MARK / NOTE: this puts the picture in place on the page. Part 4b – and finally, add another COLON to make the picture clickable – COLON http://www.redbubble.com/people/kvalle Voila – it all looks like this and it is this that you put into the description box / / It should result in something like this Do check out Kara Rasmanis’ great portfolio / And the adventurous version….. Do check out Kara Rasmanis’ great portfolio / / You do it exactly the same, using 1b & 2b, for a clickable link, in comment boxes, or in Bubblemails. You can just use 3b on its own for inserting a picture Use 3b + 4b to make that picture clickable There is more information on all this here and more here and a CheatSheet here and StacyLee’s here and it’s worth going to The Learning Centre as well hope this helps. Any questions, do ask. dave

I seem to get my share of creepy and nasty bubblemails and emails. Thankfully not all that often, but often enough. I have always used two tactics with such people. The first is to reply to them “I don’t think that was an appropriate email to send, but seeing as how you do, you won’t mind me publishing it with your email address on my profile.” While this works well as a scare tactic, it doesn’t prevent them from moving onto another victim. The other tactic is to report the offending bubblemail to redbubble using the link provided and let someone objective review it and act. Today I got an (in my opinion unprovoked) email that said: “You are so disgusting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” This is just the latest. I’ve had much worse: untalented, slut, idiot, you should be ashamed, f words, revolting… the list goes on. Heck, I’m the first to admit when I’ve pushed someone’s buttons wrong but I’m only quoting ‘out of the blue’ type mails here. Anyway… I’m on a tangent. My discussion questions are: What do you think is the best way to deal with people who bubblemail or email nasty things? Do people actually use the report button? And if not – why not? Any good ideas for how to tackle situations where people are not as lovely as they first appear? Where does this type of behavior become bullying or harrassment?

Hello! Another week another RedBubble release. This week there’s a couple of new things – the ability to bulk delete BubbleMail and a sneak preview of a the RedBubble ‘private site’. The private site is designed to allow you to create a site showcasing just your work. The thinking behind the private site is that RedBubble needs to evolve into a much more dynamic website. Everyone wants different things from RedBubble. Some folks are here for the learning, some are here to sell, some are here for the positive feedback, some are here to be entertained. Et cetera. We’re never going to be able to create one static site that satisfies all needs, so over the next little while we’re going to evolve RedBubble into a much more dynamic site that people can tailor and adapt to suit their needs. The private site is still a few weeks away from public release, but we’ve got a very very early beta product ready for today and I’ll like to show you all an example and ask for your feedback. The example site can be found here and I’d particularly value general feedback on the new configuration menu which appears to the right of the large images (the menu is still a work in progress) and the options you’d like to see us offer in the private site as we build it out over the next couple of weeks. And finally we stumbled across this review of RedBubble a couple of days ago. We love these reviews and they’re great for improving the Google rank of RedBubble and all the work on RedBubble. So if you feel like writing about RedBubble please ‘go nuts’. The more links back to RedBubble the better. You might also want to check out all the tools for linking to RedBubble available here. Have a great week! Peter

We have just had a small technical overhaul at RedBubble with the installation of some new systems. These systems have zero downtime and are immune from viruses or any known technical glitch. They also run entirely on biomass (human) energy. The only wonder is that they had not been thought of before. Ed is the first person to have his system fully installed. This is a picture of him using it. As part of this release we have added a new “featurette” to the site. The first person to discover it and bubblemail me (pilgrim) about it wins a $20 gift voucher. VOUCHER HAS BEEN WON – SEE BELOW

Please note that this hack is no longer needed because the new bubblemail system has a preview facility. Inspired by this thread (although it is a subject that has come up many times before) on the RedBubble forums I’ve created a Greasemonkey script to implement a very simple BubbleMail preview facility. It works by adding a preview button to your screen when you compose a new BubbleMail: When you press the button a preview of your BubbleMail will appear below the button: It’s not perfect. It has some issues. But it’s a start. See over here for more details about the script and to get a copy.
IMPORTANT! / If you like the design but you want an other character or an other kind of color combination you have to comment here or at my deviantART page and I can get it done for you. If, for example, you want one with the character H and the color blue, you give me a comment which says: / Character: H / Color: Blue I hope to hear from you guys soon!

WRITTEN AUG 08 - Hi everyone, I am by no means an expert, but I do have some great, simple tips and hints that can help get you noticed and on your way to selling your shirts. These may have been covered on the forums, but I wanted to streamline it a bit and put it all in one tight package. First, I recommend that you get familiar with copying images and links on Redbubble.com by reading the information on the forums to get a basic idea of it all. Take note of these ideas, and if you have any success since reading this article, drop the thumbnail of your of your sold shirt here with an embedded link to that shirt so we can congratulate you! —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— So here we go, starting with the most obvious thing first - 1. ONLY POST THE BEST DESIGNS IN YOUR PROFILE / I can’t stress this enough, if your design is not as good as it could be, it will bring down your entire portfolio – so go through your portfolio and be harsh in culling anything that doesn’t receive much attention or look as good as the rest. It is much better to have 5 amazing pieces than 30 half decent ones! 2.SHOWING A HIGHER QUALITY PREVIEW IN THE SIDE BAR / You may be aware that you can show a larger preview of your work in the right hand side bar, but this can often be the low quality image that we copy directly off the website. I would recommend for those tech-savvy people, to use a high quality preview file, showing the whole image or using only a zoomed in section of your image. This will give your customers a much better understanding of the quality they will get from the lines/detail of your work. You will notice on most of my works, like this / one, I have included a higher quality preview image in the right hand side bar, in this case it even has a custom watermark – ooh snazzy! There is a simple way to do this – first, after you have uploaded your shirt, go back into the program you used to make the design. Open that design and make it smaller – Width 500px and save it as a jpg. You can make it much larger than this, but I find it to be the best size. Then, upload the jpg to a website like Flickr, Facebook, Myspace or anywhere you can upload a picture. Then copy the link for where that picture is saved – _this can usually be done by right clicking on the image, going to Properties and copying the entire Address (URL). Once you have that link copied, Edit your recently uploaded shirt, and in the description box, after your words, put in an exclamation mark , followed by the link, http://example.com/image.jpg and then follow that with another exclamation point. Redbubble.com uses the exclamation marks as brackets to display images, much like the inverted commas are used to display someone speaking. 3. USING LINKED THUMBNAILS AROUND REDBUBBLE / Example: / Linked Thumbnails are a visual tease, advertising your work. Displayed in the right place they can be very effective. I would recommend going that one step further and displaying your best designs on your home page, shirt previews and in the forums (when appropriate). This is a great example of using linked thumbnails to display your other work – Here , and if you click through to his home page you will see rudeboyskunk has displayed his best work again, in linked thumbnail form. It is actually quite simple to display linked thumbnails around your site. First, go to your home page (by clicking on your name at the top right of the page). In the Clothing section, click on the View All Clothing link. This will display all your clothing works in thumbnail format. For this example (I’m using Internet Explorer), right click on the thumbnail you want to use. Go to Properties and copy the full Address (URL). It is best to open up Notepad, or Microsoft Word and paste the link into there. / Then, under the thumbnail you just clicked on, right click on the Name of the thumbnail, go to Properties and copy the full Address (URL). Paste this under the thumbnail link in Notepad or Microsoft Word. You should have something like this - / http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/clothing/bodycolor:black/cropped/ / size:small/style:mens/view:main/151516 EXAMPLE SHIRT.jpg (IMAGE LINK) http://www.redbubble.com/people/diesellaws/clothing/1572613 EXAMPLE SHIRT (PAGE LINK) Now all you need is to put them together (the end result will look something like this): !IMAGE LINK!:PAGE LINK Then next thing to do is copy that whole lot of text and paste it into your profile section, description, emails and forums. Do the same thing for every thumbnail you want to display. It may be a bit time consuming, but it looks professional and if and you are willing to put in the effort, it will pay off. 4. REPLYING TO COMMENTS/LEAVING COMMENTS/THANKING PEOPLE / No matter how many things are taking up your time in this busy world, there is never an excuse for not replying to, commenting on and Watchlist-ing another artist. This simple (but often forgotten) gesture will start discussions, and more often than not, increase the views of your work. Every now and then, I head to the Clothing page and view the recent works – then I pick out a few I like and comment them, and in most cases, favourite them. If their portfolio is really good, I will even add the artist to my Watchlist. When someone leaves a comment on your work, make a point to reply back to them straight away, thanking them for their comment. They have taken the time to go through the mass of submissions, to end up on your work and gone even further to leave you a comment! You should always thank them for that! Also, if you like an artist, send them a Bubblemail. It takes two seconds to do and it is great for getting tips and building a friendship. When I first started on RB I was really impressed with thickblackoutline , so, I sent her a Bubblemail (and added her to my Watchlist. It wasn’t long before I received some very useful tips and inspiration, and we are now in the process of co-hosting a group. If an artist inspires you, or you have a question, do not be afraid to ask! You never know what kind of tips they will pass on and, they may even like your work! 5. PROMOTING ON OTHER WEBSITES / I’m sure you are all aware of how advertising on other websites can increase sales. But most of you aren’t aware that the best advertising is right in front of you! Most people have a Facebook, Myspace and or Bebo etc. On Facebook, you can post pictures of your artwork in your Photos section – and put a link to the shirt in the description! This will get sent to all your friends on their homepage letting them know that you have just uploaded a new picture – think of how many friends may be interested to know you have just uploaded a Darth Vader Rocks” T-shirt!. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I really hope these tips help you and I would love to know how you went since implementing some of these hints. If you like, you can send me a Bubblemail! Good luck, Diesel Laws —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / LINK TO THIS PAGE – http://www.redbubble.com/people/diesellaws/journal/1574934-how-to-sell-shirts-hints-and-tips / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-

Hello hello, We’re a chatty bunch and over time it’s been interesting to see how much correspondence has moved to BubbleMail: There’s almost as many BubbleMails sent as comments made. For something so heavily used, the current implementation of BubbleMail has been bugging us for months. So over the last few weeks Xavier and Russ have been working on an update. The update is not quite ready (it needs more testing and polishing in Internet Explorer) but today I’d like to give you a sneak preview: The idea with the update is to make it more visually appealing and to provide easy access to the history of a conversation. So you click on a person and it shows you the conversation you’ve had with that person … you’re not overwhelmed with the entire conversation at once (we only show you the last few messages by default) but it’s only a click to see more messages in the conversation. You don’t have to go to a separate page to respond … it all happens on the same page. Much easier! Fingers crossed we’ll release this next Thursday. - Peter

Hi All I’m feeling very generous and feel like making over 1000 comments this week. People have made many comments on my photos along my journey and I feel like passing them back. So if you would like a photo commented on please place a link to the photo here or bubblemail me. Other wise just watch out for an out of nowhere comment. Wish me luck.

Hello hello, Today we released new BubbleMail. The idea is to make it easier to follow a conversation. By default the last one or two messages in the conversation are displayed … and you can see more history by clicking on the ‘show history’ link at the top right. You can also see a preview of your messages by clicking the ‘live preview’ link underneath the text box. Well done to Xavier and Russ for making this all happen! -Peter PS – Here’s a tutorial video for those who are new to BubbleMail: flowplayer('player', '/swf/flowplayer.commercial-3.0.0.swf', { clip: {autoPlay: false}, canvas: { backgroundGradient: 'none', backgroundImage: 'url(http://www.redbubble.com/images/mybubble/bm_tutorial.jpg) no-repeat'}, key: '$cd7506adf0c7eb17f8a'});

Sorry to make this come as a journal entry but I can’t do what hosts can do, which is mass mail my friends. A bummer but probably a goo thing. LOL! What I have in my mail now is HUNDREDS of things I can’t ID and can’t weed thru either. You know how you sometimes get “Ooops! I forgot/messed up a link” four times in a day and three times in a row from the same artistic (read “neurotic”) host? Know how you have friends that host and hosts who are friends but used to be able to tell their messages apart? Know what it’s like to NOT want to enter 12 challenges/votes a daily? I’m sure most of you do. It’s a lot like homework in high school. Each teacher assigns a ‘fair’ amount for you to do for the night, completely ignoring the fact that 5 or 6 OTHER teachers are ALSO assigning an additional ‘fair’ amount of homework for the night. Well, there’s only ONE night and 6 times the amount of work you can do in one night’s ‘fair’ amount of homework! Now I have something like one teacher (i.e. hosts in RB) dishing out solely a fair amount of Bmail yet I can’t tell the forest for the TREES when there’s scores of Bmail from everywhere. Add in all of you: friends I want to chat with; maybe a half dozen urgent requests from group members; compliments/hate mail about my work (Not really since NOBODY hates my work. Hehehe!); “new to me” people who want to network around common interests; inquiries about specifics in a piece I produced, and; easily 20 or more other things I can’t remember while ranting. Suddenly I don’t know who is who and can’t even tell dates and times mail arrived without open every single conversation. I’m not sure what a “conversation” is or how Red Bubble tells them apart. I doubt it’s by reading every single word from every single one daily. (If so, I’m in one HUGE amount of hurt! ROTFLMAO!) Amanda, I just lost every single thing we’ve talked about, every single word. I don’t even know how it deleted much less what you said in the unopened Bmail. Worse, you probably don’t know what I opened already or haven’t even seen yet. Hopefully this new mail system will allow you to cut and paste everything on a new Bmail and send it all back to me. Otherwise we start over right now: “Hello, my name is Lenny…” LMAO! If there’s a new incoming mail filter, I don’t know where it is and would LOVE to hear about it. Bottom line, if you don’t get replies to Bmail from me in a timely manner, or you don’t get replies at ALL, your message lost somewhere in or accidentally deleted from (currently) 56 “live” Bmail from both friends and hosts, some of which are very prudent with group Bmail and some…. well, you know. I’m writing the advisory email to Red Bubble while hoping/urging everyone who’s now feeling like I do – totally buried in a tidal wave of completely unsortable incoming mail – to let your feelings be known. Red Bubble listens but they will need to hear something to listen to it. I’m one voice in the wind unless others who are also in the wind make yourselves heard. Honestly, I’m not complaining about change. Changes recently have been extremely good here in RB. Even this one has the SUPER benefit of allowing you to read what someone is replying to that you wrote but can’t remember for the life of you. LOL! However, the loss of control is so radical I’m afraid I’m going to lose track of many of you and lose the mail I really WANT to read from people I really what to talk to. My only other option is to pull everything out of groups and quit them to filter my mail to just people who want/need to reach me. I’m not giving up on a single one of you and losing all membership to groups is a tiny price to pay to achieve that. Only friends and strangers have purchased my work, only friends and strangers have supported my work. I thank and cherish you ALL. I consider every one of the wonderful featurings and mentions within groups to be from individuals within groups because that’s what they are. I’ve won no challenges nor contests, which would be ‘group’ related/created. Yet, people who have only seen a single thing I produced and submitted to a single group have honoured me. That didn’t come from a group; that came from one group with the fine people in the Red Bubble community. :-) So, I’ll write to Red Bubble and beg for a return to some sort of the former normalcy in Bmail or dump all groups except the ones I host, co-host, or moderate by the 20th of this month. That’s about as long I can stand not to have contact with you: my friends receiving notification of this by watchlist along with those following my contributions – hitting my site to the tune of 37,000 hits in 12 months or 3000 HITS PER DAY!!! That’s my indication of your incredible support. :-D Thank you most sincerely. That MORE than warrants my every possible effort to stay in touch with individuals I dearly hold in high esteem. You people ROCK!

Hello, So I think it’s often useful to wait a week or two after releasing a new feature to solicit feedback – that way the feedback can be more focused on the things that aren’t working – rather than the things that are annoying because they’ve changed. A few weeks ago we released an update to BubbleMail. We made these changes so that people could see the history of their conversations and so that we didn’t have to move up and down so much to go from one conversation to the next (we wanted to make the process of conversing with people lighter and easier). So now I’d like to ask for your feedback. After using it for a few weeks what things about BubbleMail aren’t working? What things do you like? Thanks, Peter PS – we’ve had a lot of feedback about Group Mail and people not wanting to receive Group Mail via the BubbleMail interface – so we’re working on splitting Group Mail out into a different interface.
If you want the design to be in a different colour just let me now :) / /
Just a little something something I did on a brain-break to be happy about the site release today. Of course, thanks to the wonderful Silk Icon Set
