The Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren (near Brussels), Belgium showcases a collection of ethnographic objects from Central Africa. Belgium has been criticized for its historical roll in the Congo. According to Wiki the museum was first built to show off King Leopold II’s Congo Free State for the 1897 World Exhibition. It focuses mainly on Congo, Belgium’s former colony. The sphere of influence however (especially regarding to biological research) extends to the whole Congo River basin, Middle Africa, East Africa and West Africa, but tries to integrate Africa as a whole. First purely intended as a colonial museum, after 1960 it became more focused on ethnography and anthropology. Like in most museums, there is a research department and a public exhibit department. Not all research is pertaining to Africa, for example the research on the archaeozoology of Sagalassos.
People never look up at the windows. They really should.
This is a reworking of ‘street of the candlesticks’, edited down to 500 words for a RB group. As soon as I heard the theme ‘The City’ I knew I had to write of my beloved Brussels. I lived in the Sablon, the medieval artists’ quarter of tiny crooked lanes and crumbling gargoyles. My house held five storeys lilting into the Flemish sky; my room had blood red walls and huge ivory windows that looked out over the cobblestones. I would sit there day after day with a pen in my hand, and stories were always delivered to my windowsill. People never look up. They really should. Flemish / Kandelaarsstraat – candlestick street / Wat doe je daar, schramoelenbak? – What are you doing, trash bag? / maa crotje – my honey bee / mijn schattebolleke – my little ball of darling
Brussel Sprouts as they are grown – amazing how many people have not seen them like this. Camera: Nikon D40X
Two faithful friends make their way in the world together on the streets of Brussels, Belgium. Photographed with Canon Digital Rebel EOS300, 80-200 Telephoto Lens Wayne D. King’s images are a celebration of life, blending the real and the surreal to achieve a sense of place or time that reaches beyond the moment into a dreamlike quintessentialism designed to spark an emotional response. Using digital enhancement, handcrafting, painting, and sometimes even straight photography, King seeks to take the viewer to a place that is beyond simple truth to where truth meets passion, hope and dreams. © Wayne D. Believe it or not, these are baby brussel sprouts belonging to the biggest sprout farm in the southern hemisphere!! Right here in the Yarra Valley. One wouldn’t normally get excited necessarily about that, but this was an unusual perspective and gave me a whole new respect for the little vegetables and the people who grow them!
B&W HDR – an old pic that I pulled out of the ‘Bad’ folder I have on my comp – LOL (I really need help in naming)
I know I’ve been gone a long, long time. There are a lot of reasons for the absence (can we say winter blahs?), not the least of which being a broken monitor calibrator that has been MIA for 2 months now. My posts still won’t be back to their daily regularity but I wanted to share a few recent images I made close to home over the past few days. I photographed these cherry blossoms at Parc Leopold in Brussels, Belgium. Spring is finally here! If you like this image enough to look at it for a whole month, you can download the desktop wallpaper calendar on my blog Gear: Nikon D80, AF-S MICRO NIKKOR 105mm 1:2.8G ED
