Bank holiday….what do you do? As a sub contractor for a bank, I gladly accepted a day off and headed for the hills. Woke up really early and traveled out to the outskirts of Sydney. Had a great few hours of photography. This was my last shot for the day. It was getting late (11.30am) and the light was becoming harsh – but I actually turned around and drove back to take this shot…..just love the bareness of the land Photo Taken: 6-Aug-2007 / Time: 11:30am / Conditions: Beautiful winters day / / / / / / / / / Some other images from the same trip: / / / / / / /

This is the old Beamish wheel in County Durham, England. Painted in watercolour and pencil, in the style of Thomas Hair (1810 – 1875). / My hero from the 1830’s. He is unknown in his own town (Newcastle upon Tyne) and was buried in an unmarked grave, but his work was stunning. Finding artistic beauty, amongst the hellish conditions of industry, in the 1830’s! This is my latest (and my personal favourite) from my Thomas Hair series.
This is another shot taken in Pakistan capturing the beauty that is created by the hands of the people. Here you see a man’s hands forming a bowl identical to the tens and twenties he has already created that morning. What you don’t see is that he sits on a flat rock on the floor surrounded by sand and gravel under a tattered tent shielding him from the blistering heat. But these conditions do not effect the perfection of his craft. In the hour I spent with him, never did a bowl turn out to be anything other than what he expected, perfect.

The North Sea at Whitby. The Herring boats at misty dawn, / To get the details of the boats correct, I’ve used a Victorian photo as the subject. I liked the very hard pen ink lines of the foreground, contrasting with the soft, misty, wet-in-wet background. 90 lb watercolour, medium rough paper. / 12”x8”

I took this photo of a wren last year, but I didn’t do much with it because I didn’t like the background. Now that I’m experimenting with layers and textures, I thought I’d have another whack at it and came up with this image. I’ve named it Mother Wren at Work. I love the way wrens always add soft mosses and lichen to their nests and the way they build a tiny dome like structure often inside potted ferns and plants on the patio. They are master constructionists and best of all they sing joyfully and powerfully. This tiny bird’s song is truly bigger than its body! Please view larger; Mrs. Wren would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
I visited an abandoned brickworks factory in Melbourne, with fellow bubbler, Chris (pennphotography). The place was full of old rusted cogs and machines used to make the bricks. Tricky footwork and a lot of dust later, this is one of the final shots I came up with. Looking through Chris’ folio, you will find more pieces from our adventures in the abandoned factory. More to come.. Featured in Monochrome / Featured in Unwanted Abandoned & Saved Through Preservation Original file layered and texture layer added from www.deviantart.com – free use stock. Hue desaturated and lightness slightly increased. Canon 50D / 18 – 55, 58mm Edited 9pm MCN: C5U5Q-3N26U-6MYGD
