Hunting thruout Venice’s canals and alleys for something special to photograph, I came upon this painted figure at the end of an alley. There was an artist who had painted these shadowy figures thruout Venice the second year that I was in Venice working on a series of photographs of the city by full moonlight. Every now and then you’d come across one. It always took you by surprise because you would never anticipate it. I never found out who the artist was nor do I know what became of the work itself but it held an allure for me. Click once on image to enlarge. / / / /

It is not how it looked in the viewfinder but it is how I wanted it to look in the end. The process of creating photographs is one with endless possibilities between the accurate recordings and significant transformations through camera settings and post processing steps. There is no "right" way to do all this and all options are available – at least for the open minded. So we choose the shutter speed, set the aperture, widen the angle or zoom in, highlight some elements, darken others, sharpen somethings, blur others, saturate and de-saturate, blend and hide,... all which change and transform the raw photo into something interesting for the eye – at times even visual art. Here I tried to create a piece of work that resembled the reality but also transcended into new visual dimensions which could not be seen by the human eye on location – merely in my mind. The long exposure and various post processing steps made this possible. The raw material was captured on Havskåren, a tiny island in the Oslofjord by the Nøtterøy archipelago. I posted this because I liked how the composition turned out. I also love the colors – muted yet warm and inviting. Earth colors. I hope you enjoy this work as much as I enjoyed creating it.
I loved this little alley with / such quaint shops…..

The other casualties of war—those left behind, are seldom considered after the folded flag is given in memory of their loved one’s sacrifice. This piece pays homage to those left behind, and explores “Feeling the Void”. It features the riderless horse, which, although reserved for colonels, or above, in the Army or Marine Corps, here, symbolizes the soul of the lost soldier. The horse here is a Friesian horse, on which a star blaze has been added as a tribute to “Black Jack”, a long serving riderless horse. The young woman represents a daughter, nearly grown, for all intents and purposes, but always and forever “Daddy’s girl”. Take a moment with me and remember the wives, husbands, children, brothers, and sisters of the lost soldiers who paid their respective country with their life and, also, the lives of those they left behind. Watercolour of the 12th century, Haddon Hall, Derbyshire. / Taken from Rinkydink’s original photo. I used lots of lifting off and negative painting, to get the tonal contrasts. I wanted to emphasize the age and wonderful textures of the old stone work – almost a thousand years old. I’ve entered this in the Just Watercolours group challenge. / I really liked the original photo colouring. For this, I needed a limited palette of just four – sienna, umber, cerulean and yellow , which I used in various dilutions and mixtures. I live near the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano, where every year in March, the Swallows come back to Capistrano. Many of them can be seen at this mission. This man was dressed to represent the Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order that lived here in the 18th and 19th century. An absolutely beautiful mission with an amazing history.
